October 16, 2011 at 2:54 am in reply to: Replacing stock footage samples with high-res purchased clips in moving split-screens: best workflow?Do you know how to Paste Attributes? You might want to look it up, but it works like this:
1) Select the watermarked clip and copy it (CMD-C)
2) Replace watermarked clip with high res clip (edit overlay/blue button/F11)
3) Select high res clip in timeline
4)Edit>Paste Attributes>Basic Motion>OK

Hi, Dane
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I think you’re right about it being a sequence setting/BMD output discrepancy.
Here’s the problem. The frame rate of most of my sequences is 23.98, but I don’t see any BMD settings for 720p 23.98, so I imagine that’s why I get no signal out.
(Maybe you can clarify this: When I look at the Item Properties of the Seequence in FCP–or the clips, for that matter–the Compressor is DVCPRO HD 720p60, but the Vid Rate is 23.98 fps. I have to confess I have no idea what that even means.)
I do see that the BM has three options for HD 720p60 (8-bit, 10-bit and RGB), but none of those gets videos to play in the monitors. Last frame played shows up as a still, but no video in motion when I play the sequence.
Curiously, I can get the video to play if I set the BMD output to HD 1080p 23.976 (8-bit or RGB 10-bit), but then text looks jaggy (as if interlaced but with the field order reversed; however, if I select 720p 50 8-bit, I don’t get any video in motion, but at least the text looks crisp in the stills.) Also odd is that if I go into Sys Prefs>Blackmagic>Processing, it doesn’t seem to matter whether “Select output processing” is set to HD 720p to HD 1080i or Off.
Normally, most of what we shoot is 720p 23.98. I do have one project that was shot on a Canon 5D at 1080 and I can get that sequence to play at either 1080p 23.976 10-bit or 8-bit (but not RGB 10-bit).
Needless to say, I’m fairly confused at this point. Any insight you can offer would be most appreciated.

Have you looked at Noise Industries FxFactory? Sugarfx makes a plugin for FxFactory called Video Wall 2.2:
https://www.sugarfx.tv/info/videowall_SUGARfx.html
I’ve not used it, but you can look at the user manual on line and see it does what you need. And it’s on sale during NAB for $47.20.
Good luck!

Hi, Jeremy
The media was indeed offline, that’s what is so puzzling.
I have solved the problem, though, by exporting the bin as XML and opening the XML file in a new project. After I did that, Clip Settings worked in the new project as I thought it should. Batch captured and dragged the newly captured clips from the new project into the old bin –after deleting the old clips first. Curiously the clips in the new project captured to the old projects Capture Scratch file. (I would have expected a file for the new project. Hmm.)
Whatever; it worked.
Thanks to you and Chris both for coming to my aid. Gotta love the Cow!

Thanks for following up, Jeremy.
I have unchecked the check box in the L&T Preferences, as you have advised.
But Batch Capture just recaptured all my clips without audio as before.
Where do I go to make it also capture the video plus Ch 1 & 2 audio (besides Modify>Clip Settings, which is still telling me “No items have files that are applicable to this operation”)?
Frustrating . . .

Thanks, Chris. (“Visual Flight Rules” made no sense)
No, VFR. Just a sit down interview in a studio. So there is definitely audio.
Curiously, I checked again this morning and Clip Settings will allow me to change the number of audio channels on the one clip that was transferred with audio, but not on the clips that were transferred without audio.
Starting to sound like a bug.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, Jeremy
I have to plead ignorance. What does VFR mean?

Another question, Jeremy.
Does the Cache-A do incremental backups? What if I’ve previously archive a project’s media folder, but since then additional material has been added? If I drag the folder to the Source Directory, does it transfer the entire contents of the folder or just the newly added material?
Thanks.

Hi, Jeremy
Thanks for the reply.
I’ve my Cache-A Prime and a box of LTO-4 tapes, but I have the feeling I shouldn’t start archiving until I’ve got a well-thought out organizational system in place. Get off on the wrong foot and I’m screwed somewhere down the road. (Years ago, I used Retrospect and Mezzo, but that was back in my Media 100 days.) At the moment, I just copy files to external hard drives in the hopes that if my Mac or RAID ever fails, I’ve got backups on another drive on the shelf.
I am thinking my primary objective should be to backup all raw footage (generally P2) and all media files used in FCP projects. Secondarily, I’d like to archive the actual Final Cut project files. Wouldn’t hurt to create a disk image of a clonable boot drive periodically just to be safe, I suppose.
As for how to organize my archive, I’m thinking about dedicating a series of tapes to each client/product. So if I did car commercials, for example, I would have a Ford Fusion set of LTOs and a Toyota Camry set of LTOs. If we add a brand from an existing client, then that material goes on Toyota Prius LTO #1 or if we pick up a new client, then it’s Kia Optima #1.
Does this seem like a sensible arrangement to you? Or have you found a better solution?
I guess I’m asking this: how have you integrated the Cache-A into your business and your workflow?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks again.
