You probably turned off “Audio Scrubbing” accidentally. The control for this is, oddly, under the View drop down menu.
To turn it back on, go to View>Audio Scrubbing (or Shift-S, maybe).

While I am a fan of Herman Miller in general, I have never cared for the popular Aeron chair. My all-time favorite chair is the no less expensive “Leap” by Steelcase. Second favorite would be the “Freedom” by Humanscale. Look for used chair on ebay or on your local Craigslist (to save on shipping–these chairs are heavy).
As others have corrected observed, the chair is only part of the solution. But it’s also true that a good chair is a worthwhile investment.
Good luck!

You’re on the right path. I just wanted to make sure you were going the Log & Transfer route, rather than converting the AVCHD files by some other means.
When the L&T window pops up, you can clip on the little gear like disclosure triangle and click on Preferences. This will show you if the AAVCHD Plugin is installed and give you the option of transcoding to Apple ProRes 422 or the Apple Intermediate Codec. ProRes 422 is fine for your purposes, although you’ll discover that the transcoded files are much larger than the original AVCHD files.
To get you through Compressor, you might want to use the search function on this forum (I think there’s a separate Cow forum on the subject of Compression, but not one specifically for Apple Compressor).
But what you’re probably looking to do is export your HG10 clips to Compressor, look under Settings window for Other Workflows>High Definition, select a setting (HD Uncompressed 8-bit 1080i60–or whatever matches the HG20), then check in the Inspector window under the Encoder tab to check the specs (it should say Width: 1920, Height: 1080).Hope that helps.

June 18, 2010 at 5:29 pm in reply to: Multi Cam Editing in FCP 7 w/Canon HG10 & HG20 problem. It might help if you explain the process you employ to transcode the AVCHD files the Canon produces into something FCP can edit.
But Rich is right that you cannot have two clips of two different formats in the same sequence.
How much do you know about Compressor? Sounds like you’ll have to use Compressor to convert the HG10 clips to match the specs of the HG20 clips (or maybe vice versa would work better).
Good luck!

Hi, Adam
Hopefully one the really smart people here will answer your questions, but I thought I’d take a stab with my limited knowledge.
Yes, I’m afraid you’re going to have to go with a single frame rate. I don’t believe it’s possible to have 23.98 and 29.97 in the same timeline (well, not successfully–as you have already discovered). And, yes, it’s an in-camera setting at the time you shot the footage. So you’re going to have to convert the 23.98 clips to 29.97 or vice versa.
I believe you have two tools available for doing frame rate conversion: Compressor and Cinema Tools. You might search the forum for “frame rate conversion” or something and I bet you’ll get lots of hits.
The good news is that you don’t need the P2 cards anymore. The clips created in the Log & Transfer process can be converted.
As for the deinterlace filters, I don’t what to tell you. Did you shoot in 1080i or 480i? (Most folks buy the 170 because it can shoot progressive.)
Good luck!

You might want to take a look at the Canon HF S21:

June 3, 2010 at 9:32 pm in reply to: What is the best tapeless HD camera that is the most compatible with FCP editing?A fine camera, Shane, but she said the budget is $3000 for two cameras. You’d only get one HVX-170 on that budget.

As a rule, asking the question “What’s the best (anything)?” on any Cow forum is likely to get you ignored or insulted. The “best” is highly subjective and depends on your needs, your skills, your budget, etc.
Having said that, if your budget is $1500 per camera (you said $3000 for two), I don’t think you’re going to find a tapeless HD camera that has a particularly seamless workflow with FCP.
It sounds like what you’d like is the JVC GY-HM100U which is supposed to save video as QuickTime files, so no Log & Transfer (i.e., transcoding) is necessary.
I’ve not worked with this camera and I don’t know how good it is, much less whether it would be the best solution for you. But you’d only be able to afford one of them on your budget.
https://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp?model_id=MDL101845
So unless your budget doubles, you’re probably looking at some flavor of AVCHD. It looks better than miniDV and will transfer faster than ingesting a tape, but it will eat up lots of drive space: if you convert to ProRes–it can be as much as ten times larger (i.e., 5 GB of AVCHD footage can transcode to 50 GB of ProRes clips), so buy cheaper cameras and stock up on hard drives!
Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me will have better news.

May 9, 2010 at 1:52 am in reply to: Is there a function in Final Cut pro to see a grid or thirds in the canvas or viewer?Digital Heaven, maker of very cool FCP plug-ins, has a couple of freebies, including one or two that will do what you need:

I can’t remember if it’s DH Grid or DH Guides, but one of them (maybe both) will get the job done.
And did I mention they’re free?
Good luck.
