August 15, 2010 at 6:26 pmIt’s not just about a good chair, it’s also proper posture, correct keyboard position( lower than your armrests) monitor position and room lighting, all of which affect your ability to work lengthy periods of time.

August 15, 2010 at 7:10 pmI have to agree with Gary, that your entire workstation needs to be set up well, otherwise you may not get all the benefits of a great chair.
You should also take a break and get up every hour. That being said, Herman Miller makes some beautiful and expensive office chairs. Be prepared for a +1K price range. HM chairs are not only functional, but they are built to last. They will have a 20 year lifespan of daily office type use, so the cost per year is pretty low. In the long run its cheaper than replacing a worn out $200 ‘X Depot’ chair every couple of years.

August 15, 2010 at 7:22 pmWhile I am a fan of Herman Miller in general, I have never cared for the popular Aeron chair. My all-time favorite chair is the no less expensive “Leap” by Steelcase. Second favorite would be the “Freedom” by Humanscale. Look for used chair on ebay or on your local Craigslist (to save on shipping–these chairs are heavy).
As others have corrected observed, the chair is only part of the solution. But it’s also true that a good chair is a worthwhile investment.
Good luck!

August 16, 2010 at 3:47 amForget the chair… try standing!
Seriously. There are some great “edit desks” that raise from sitting to standing level with the touch of a button. When your back starts hurting, kick back the chair and stand up. It’ll do wonders for your back.

August 17, 2010 at 10:57 amAs others have suggested, standing is a great thing from time to time. We have the Anthro Fit Console in our suites.

The entire keyboard shelf, well it’s more than a shelf since it holds my keyboard and wacom tablet very nicely, moves up and down allowing the user to stand. And if not standing, you can move the entire keyboard shelf into a nice comfortable position for working.
Add some computer monitor swing arms and you can bring the monitors up too. Here’s one of the Fit Consoles in my edit suite.
