I’d do it as two separate layers with vertical masks, one for the left side one for the right. Apply normal key settings to the side without the black… adjust mask shrink on the side with the black. You have to do some tweaking of the masks and feather so you don’t see a seam.

It says on Adobe’s site that you can upgrade to AE CS3 for $299.

  • How big are these Quiktimes? Does it crash as soon as you import or once you start working with it on a timeline. Is your “Max memory usage” pref set to less than 3G. Anything over 3G for all Rosetta apps (Photoshop – Illustator etc.)combined will crash you. Open up Activity Monitor, any processes labelled PowerPC are using Rosetta. If all else fails I’d reinstall AE from scratch.

I synch a lot of text to audio for TV spots. I STRONGLY recommend playing the audio in an editor (or RAM preview the audio directly in AE) and writing timecode or frame number cues (whichever you prefer) on your script. Usually the cue for the first word of a sentence or phrase is all you need. Its a lot more accurate with the waveform visible (shortcut “ll” in AE). It takes me about 5 minutes to do and saves me hours of RAM previews and tweaks. You can then animate all of your text without even listening to audio… just following the cues on your script.

In “User Interface Colors” pref select “Use Gradients” and drop the interface brightness down a couple notches. It makes a noticable difference between trimmed and untrimmed portions of a layer.

Universal binary is HUGE for me. Since switching to an Intel Mac, AE7 has been $#@*!. I’ll reserve judgement until I try it but if it does RAM previews without crashing every 10 minutes, lets me use all of my RAM, and actually runs faster like other Universal apps on Intel Macs (Final Cut flies on Intel) I’ll be a happy camper. Any other new features are gravy for me. Puppet Show? We’ll see….

A quick and dirty would be to use the “Simple Choker” effect in After Effects. Adjust the “Choke Matte” setting until the white pixels go away.

Try removing 1 GB of RAM from you MacPro. It sucks to have to reduce the overall performance of your computer, but it worked for me.

They say they will support more than 3GB in a future release of Decklink. When that is I’m not sure.
