They use proprietary software created by Bob Sabiston called “Rotoshop”. He also used it for the movies “Waking Life” & “A Scanner Darkly”. It’s not available to the public. Read about it here: https://www.flatblackfilms.com/
If you want to recreate something similar using Illustrator & After Effects I believe Aharon Rabinowitz did a tutorial here on the cow about 6 months ago.
I just did a quick & dirty for a recent project. Apply “Posterize” or “Reduce Colour”(Pete’s Plugins)to your footage. Duplicate layer. Add “Find Edges” , “Hue/Saturation”(set Saturation to -100) & “Fast Blur” (Blur= 1 pixel) to the top layer. Change the top layers tranfer mode to “Darken”. Ta da. Kind of Cartoony, not as clean as Charles Schwab but it took you 3 minutes. This effect works best on footage where the subject is in front of a fairly clean background. To tweak the black lines add a “levels” effect and really crush the mids and whites. -
Thanks Kristian. It’s reassuring that you know what makes an engineer tick. (Tim Tams)

Try using a copy of the footage of the actress as a displacement map for the Fractal/Texture layer. It won’t be perfect but you’ll get some interaction between the effect and the shadows and highlights created by her movement. Put a levels effect on the layer you use as the displacement map to help control which areas are effected.

Do you think the bug will ever get fixed, or should I convince my boss to pony up for an Extreme HD? Since I “moved up” to a MacPro in November I’ve been patiently waiting for the forthcoming software update that’ll fix this. The only solution I’ve found is to physically remove 2GB of RAM (originally 4GB). I tried reducing the FCP Memory Usage in System Settings but still get crashes. Is there a way to reduce the Decklink’s Memory usage perhaps?

March 29, 2007 at 1:50 pm in reply to: How can we maximise the free upgrade to CS3 for adobeYou’re right it says it’s expected to ship “by” July 2007. I was going by the dates of their “Buy AE7 upgrade for Free Offer” which are listed as mar.27 to Aug.28. Obviously there’s no exact date set in stone. I’d call Adobe if you need more detailed info for budgeting & planning purposes.

It’s cool that everyone’s so excited about CS3, but it looks like we still have a while to wait. From yesterday’s announcement from Adobe I was under the impression that AE CS3 was coming out in April. After going to Adobe’s store to pre-order I saw that it’s not going to be released until Summer… possibly not until the end of August judging by the dates on their free upgrade promotion. Photoshop CS3 and the Design package are coming out in April. Humbug!!!

Did he field render the Lightwave scene. Try reinterpreting the the fields on the clip. I’ve had weird experiences with fielded stuff out of Lightwave where the fields flipped dominance in the middle of a clip. That aside, the motion blur in Lightwave looks like crap. See if your guy can render without motion blur and fake it in AE ideally with Reelsmart Motion Blur. If not use the standard directional blur or CCVector blur. If that doesn’t look good enough have your 3D guy up the number of motion blur passes in his render and render without fields. That’ll really drive up his render times tho.

March 28, 2007 at 6:51 pm in reply to: How can we maximise the free upgrade to CS3 for adobeIt looks like its the same either way. Buy AE7 Professional now for $999 and upgrade for free this summer, or wait 5 months and get CS3 for $999. What are you using now? It’s all a matter of waiting until August for CS3.

What codec were the clips created with? Also are you working on a Mac or PC?
