I feel your pain. This has been dogging us since we switched to FCP5/IO La on a G-5
The audio just cuts out. During capture, during playback, during editing. Random, frustrating, annoying. It’s not a mixdown fix – this happens with only a single clip in the entire project.
We tried all the usual things, just as you did. Rudy at AJA suggested terminating the Genlock Out on IO. I tried that (with a genlock signal going in, of course) and I tried switching the Control Panel settings between Genlock and Freerun as well.
Same Audio Cut-Outs.
Rudy also suggested that I had a bum IO box. Any other users’ feedback on this issue would be appreciated so we can figure out why this is happening, fix it, and get back to editing

September 30, 2005 at 11:34 pm in reply to: Quicktime 7 Windows and Media100 Codec playback problemsThank you, Floh. You RULE! Do you ever sleep? Isn’ it – like – really LATE where you are?
BTW, this may be a problem with Quicktime 7 and Windows in general. Not sure. We will keep all posted.

Same thing here: genlock settings get switched upon startup.

Does this happen all the time? Can you hear audio for a few seconds when you first open FCP, then it cuts out?
We have experienced a continuingly bothersome bug in FCP and IOLA that shuts down audio for no reason.
Try this: click into the finder, then back into FCP, and listen if this will bring audio back. For us it usually does, but then the audio quickly cuts out again, forcing us to do this several times until IO and FCP play nice together.
I’ve read posts with other users complaints of this same issue. I sure wish somebody had a solution, ‘cuz it makes it really hard to edit SOUND when you can’t HEAR it.

I noticed the same thing with the audio outputs from the IO LA box. Although the levels “looked” okay, the were overmodulated and distorted.
I ran the audio outs into a line-level pad (-50dB attenuator, the little Shure A15LA), changed the trim on the mixer inputs, and all sounds great now.
I believe there’s a software switch on the new IO Control Panel application where you can vary the output levels as well.

We’ve took the plunge, and FCP 5 has made the swim a bit easier than previous versions. Although M100 files are more accessible in Version 5, I’m not a fan of FCPs myriad quirks, and Version 5 often performs like a Beta Test version: audio that stops playing back, timecode difficulties, and frequent crashes.
My advice: KEEP AT LEAST ONE MEDIA 100! Since it’s already bought and paid for, It will be cheap insurance when you need to update an existing project, and for use when FCP acts up.
I thoroughly love some of FCP functions, but in my experience it’s not nearly as reliable in day-in, day-out production use as M-100.

Just curious – are you using AJA hardware?

I’m not familiar with this particular deck, but I might suggest toggling the Timecode Select Switch on the deck.
On a PVW2800 its located under the front panel, and can be switched between “VITC/Auto/LTC”
We seem to have the best luck with the “Auto” position.
Emphasis on luck, ‘cuz some tapes get better mileage than other.
