FCPro5 & AJA Capture Problems
Posted by Chrissyramone on August 11, 2005 at 8:47 amHi
Since we updated our G5 system with MAC OS 10.4. “Tiger” our Aja IO (newest firmware) makes some problems.
If we want to capture video with FCPro5, capturing stops with a message “problmes with the VTR, end of tape is reached”.
We capture via SDI A-V to DV 48khz (with a sony DigiBeta DVW 500P) PAL
If we change remote-settings to “non-controllable-device” it works.
We checked our remote-connections. They are OK.Any Ideas ? Please let us know.
Thank you very much
For sure we have installed the newest firmware and the newest drivers !
When we installed FCStudio we made a clean-install like apple recommends it !
So there were no old drivers on our system !Pete Sake replied 20 years, 9 months ago 7 Members · 13 Replies -

August 11, 2005 at 10:21 pmI’m not familiar with this particular deck, but I might suggest toggling the Timecode Select Switch on the deck.
On a PVW2800 its located under the front panel, and can be switched between “VITC/Auto/LTC”
We seem to have the best luck with the “Auto” position.
Emphasis on luck, ‘cuz some tapes get better mileage than other.

August 12, 2005 at 7:42 pmI think there are major problems with FCP 5, AJA IO and Sony decks. I have a DSR-1500 where the only way I can capture SDI is through “uncontrollable device.” I gave up on AJA tech support after 6 calls and more emails with no resolution or even replies. Not being able to capture with time code for future digitizing sessions is not acceptable in my studio work. I usually find silence is the answer when AJA can’t figure it out or doesn’t have a bug fix for you!

Nice to see you here Pete… go with AJA.
Get the ioLA and then add Kona 2 with the K-Box and you’re ready for anything. Working very well here.

August 13, 2005 at 1:34 pmThanks Harley. I assume your on FCP5 now.
I’m moving from M100 and I’m dreading the learning curve.

Once you get by the myriad of settings and do a tutorial on the Media Mangler, you’ll love it.

August 13, 2005 at 10:11 pmI think the RS-422 deck control problem with the Sony DSR-1500 may have had something to do with my Airport network settings! Apple Software update said it had a newer version of the Airport software awhile back and I installed it. Occasionally (and sporadically) a screen would come up asking if you wanted to keep all your old Airport network settings and permissions or change them all (of course this action being “irreversible”). I had always selected “do not change” until yesterday when I selected “change them all.” When I re-booted after that, my RS-422 machine control was fully restored to the DSR-1500!! Go figure….

August 14, 2005 at 2:34 amChristopher I did hear good things about the AJA tech support, perhaps they were having a bad day.
I’m going to be editing FCP5 with my Betacam 2800 deck, with an upward plan to go HD hopefully.
Trying to figure a card to do Analog component and HD possible HDV.AJA a few months ago said get the LA pt will work with Kona 2.
Kona 2 doesnt work with a Betacam deck.AJA said
For Analog SD editing, I would go with the IO LA. If you get to a point
where an HD workflow is needed, you can install a Kona 2 in the same G5.
The Kona 2 handles SD as well as HD so if you transition to SDI
interfaces you could use your IO LA to ingest analog and output it
through the Kona 2 via Component or SDIThe IO LA / Kona 2 is a great SD/HD – Analog / Digital solution

I think I’ll also eventualy have to get a K box? Is there anything else I need from AJA?Wish I could still use my old M100 p6000 card with FCP5.
Is the Kona LS a new product?
Is LA still the correct card?
Whats the best price out there? Thanks
Peter

August 14, 2005 at 8:24 amThe IO has worked wonderfully for me so far. Usually tech support has been outstanding with AJA. I don’t know what happened to them this last week. If all you are using is a Betacam, the IO-LA should work fine for you. I will be investing in the Kona 2 soon, and I love the fact that I will be able to send SDI from the IO to the Kona 2, so I will then have all possible In/Out connections covered!

August 15, 2005 at 9:17 amYa at eeh, & welcome to the AJA IO Cow, Peter!!!
I’m also a former Media 100i user (since v2.6.2 thru v8.2.2), who reeeeally dreaded the assumed learning curve to FCP and was new to FCP hardware!!!
I am dyslexic so manuals are not helpful (unless they have lots and lots of screenshots!!!). There are some great books out there, like THE FINAL CUT PRO 4 BIBLE, and Jerry Hoffman’s ON FINAL CUT 4, that are still relivant to FCP5.
Fortunately, i’m a good systems geek! I have no problem at all learning FCP because was able to dismiss any paradyme of the Media 100 work flow in order to avoid attempting to duplicate it in FCP, which would cause major frustration.
I also chose to go with AJA hardware by checking out all of the COW forums, reviews, professional recommedations, features, and most importantly the company’s history and product roadmap going foward.
I really enjoyed learning something new, and that made it not so daunting.
Also, if you can, avoid having to learn it on a deadline project!
You are in good company here, and I find many answers here and have yet to call the very responsive techs at AJA (my system uses both KONA 2 and the IO together with FCP Studio 5).
I’m sure that you will enjoy the AJA FCP community, using and exploring the great potential of AJA & FCP as I have, I have’nt looked back and don’t have ANY regrets!!!
