    Is it HD or SD?

Where did the file originally come from (i.e. what kind of camera)?
Can you load it into a brand new project?
If you can, render it out in MXF format with the same settings as the original file. The quality loss will be minimal and Vegas likes MXF files.

My preference is a good wet cleaning but you have to know what you’re doing and have the right tools or you could damage the heads.

Mike, all I can suggest is to make sure you’re using a really clean and good VCR (an SVHS machine may be even better) as it sounds like you might have tracking issues which will mess up a capture.
The other thing is to make sure the tape has been rolling for at least 5 sec. before you hit the capture button.
If none of the above work (and you have some extra money lying around), invest in an ADVC300 as it has a built-in TBC which will help correct errors.
    Good luck with the project.

[George Strother] “But this doesn’t seem like the right capture method. What do I try next.”

Nothing as that’s the right capture method for DV footage.

Mike, it’s the very first one on the General tab. Disable this and you’re all set.

I forgot to mention that you need to click OK after doing this.

You need to go into the folder properties and change the settings so that you can see the file names.
I only have XP but the procedure is similar in Vista and Windows7/8.
Open up a folder and go Tools – Folder Options – View and deselect “Hide extensions for known file types”.

You need to move the cursor back manually and delete .mp4 first, then rename it.

I use IrfanView (it’s quick, free and a great utility) to do my batch file renaming.
It also does a lot of photo processing and batch resizing but you can experiment with that at your convenience.
I do this periodically when I get several games from the athletic department at the college I work for.
A typical weekend may involve several basketball and volleyball games for both men and women.
I sort things by date into individual folders, then sport and finally men or women and then rename them as desired.
    For example, 2013-01-07-basketball-men-game-1.
It makes the final renders MUCH easier to do as well as keeping things organized for any future needs.
