Vegas showing No Device Selected in capture window
Posted by George Strother on January 6, 2013 at 8:13 amI’m trying to capture live DV video over firewire from an EX1r and a PD150 in Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.
There are no cameras shown in the Capture Preferences/Device tab.
Both cameras capture to Final Cut Pro using the same cables and camera settings.
This seems to be a Vegas/Win 7 problem. The computer is a ThinkPad w520 with Core i7 processor.
How do I get the cameras to show in the Capture Preferences/Device tab?

You don’t because you’re using the wrong capture utility. That tab is in the HDV capture utility. You need to use the DV capture utility also known as VidCap.
When you select Project | Capture Video… you should see this dialog:
You need to select DV. If you don’t see this window, go to Options | Preferences | Video and check Use external video capture application. This is the one to capture DV.

January 6, 2013 at 7:37 pmI use Win 7 occasionally, Win XP frequently, Mac mostly.
I have found a thread to update driver to Legacy. Now I see the camera. Thanks.

The camera now shows up in Vegas when I click Project/Capture or the Capture icon.
But the dialog box is called Sony Video Capture 6.0- Default. This opens on Integrated Camera and my ugly mug. On the Video tab I can select Microsoft DV Camera and VCR.With this setting I can capture live DV video from both cameras and the files are dropped into All Media in Vegas M S HD P 11. The files are AVI with 48K stereo and seem to work.
But this doesn’t seem like the right capture method. What do I try next.

Nothing as that’s the right capture method for DV footage.

Seems a bit different than Johns advise, but it is working.

That was my advice. VidCap hasn’t been changed since Vegas 6 when DV support was stopped in favor of HDV. Now HDV support has been stopped in favor of tapeless. Time marches on. 😉
BTW, DV is not really a “capture”… it’s a “digital transfer”. What is actually happening is the DV data from the tape is being transferred bit-for-bit lossless to your hard drive just like copying a file from one hard drive to another (except one file is on DV tape).

January 6, 2013 at 8:58 pmGreat. I’m capturing 65 hours of live video over firewire to 4 Firestore drives and Vegas on this laptop (ran out of Firestore drives). No tapes involved.
Thanks to everyone for all the help.
