Yes there is a way to accomplish what you need.
Duplicate your document A to a document B.
Flip Horizontal Document B.
Alt click with the clone tool to define a source point on document B.
Clone onto document A.

Strange you should be getting better resolution previews. Besides at the object level checek:
view >> display performance >> high

YOur preferences coudl possibly have gotten distorted
Check:
edit >> preferences >> display performace

IF still not working try flushing your preferences by immediately holding down these 3 keys after you boot

In Quark you could view both documents in thumbnail view and drag over to merge documents. InDesing is even easier, just have both docuemtns open adn drag from the pages palette of one document to the pastebaord of another. It seems to insert the pages at the end of the document, but you can rearrange them.

Your phone directory sounds like a huge InDesign file with many pages. You may want to look nto dividing and conquering, by using the booklet feature and posisbly dividing your document up by alphabet

There si one more very important hting you will have to do
edit >> preferences >> apperance of black >> UNCHECK overpirint black at 100%

You can confirm the importance of this by:
window >> output >> seperations Preview
Draw a red circle
draw a black box over half the red circle
toggle the visibility on/off for the black channel in the seperations palette

Schmoel is right, the resolution of the monitor is about as good as you are going to get so atleast change your monitor settings to the best you have like 1600 x1200.

I was excited long time ago when I heard maC OSX was doing screen captures in PDF but that is bitmapped PDF so the type will not be vector quality. When writing my book I bought both the mac Snapz Pro & PC Snag it. Though Snag it allows you to capture at higher resolutions than your monitor, they really do not any better than an interpolated increase over the monitor value, when do a 1 to 1 pixel preview in photoshop.

I actually prefer placing the photoshop image in Illustrator CS2 and using the live paint feature. You will have more control over the result than any of the filter or combination methods using find edges and such. There maybe also be some 3rd part filter I have not seen though, but hopefully you have AICS2.
