Probably not it, but the first thing that comes to mind is you aren’t by any chance trying to save the file in an area where you do not have write privileges are you ?? I ran into this a while back with a different (ftp) utility that simply threw anything I tried to save away. finally found it was trying to write over a read-only file (had been restored from CD) and it didn’t bother to tell me it could not write.

  • Yeah, I’ve still got the powder burns on my foot from last time I left “ripple edit” selected. 🙂

Another option would be to use an adapter (assuming your camera supports external microphones) to feed your audio into the camera, bypassing the internal mics. Now the combined output would contain the video from the camera and the audio from the external microphones. I have done that a number of times with my Sony camcorder (and the audio in the camera is pretty good – just the cheap mics on the front that are not that good).

You will have to convert it to DV if that is what you want after you import from the DVD. DVD’s video files (.VOB) are mpeg2 already – that is the format of a DVD. Using some sort of “capture” of the video from a DVD player is not going to get you any better quality than what you can get by grabbing the data from the DVD (mpeg2) and editing that into whatever format you need (although, any conversion between compressed formats usually results in lost quality)

Another vote for the Canopus ADVC-100 (it is a 110 now – earlier models were -100). Work very well and give good, clean DV format avi files. Pass through on a camcorder if you have a friend that has one you could borrow also works well.

Hopefully someone will have a more definitive answer, but a trick I have used in the past for finding the answer to questions like that is to change one setting, exit the program then do a search for all files modified in the last hour. If there is a file, you can often find it that way. Hope that helps !

Do you by chance have a second monitor that is not turned on ?? I have had this happen before where I had moved a window over to the second monitor and forgot I had done that. The application thoughtfully remembered where I left it and put it back there again … even though the monitor was not turned on 🙂

Congratulations !! I still remember wandering the halls at 3am with a crying baby asking my wife “what have we done !?!?”. One very important instruction you *MUST* follow with boys – always keep the little buggers covered when you are changing them – they’ll get you in the face every time 🙂

As an old geezer, I still remember when 2.2 Mhz was FAST !! In this case, I suspect the speed intended was 2.2 Ghz 🙂
    (I still have my old 2mhz Z-80 CP/M system downstairs ! )
