If you’re talking about what I think you’re talking about, copying and pasting paths from Illustrator into position parameters of AE might be the best way.
Alternatively, you could use Motion Sketch (and then the Smoother) to quickly animate each dot.

If it’s H.264, there is no need to use QuickTime player. QuickTime is deprecated on Macs and many people have removed QuickTime entirely due to the HUGE security issues with the web components (specifically the player). Most browsers deal with h.264’s without QuickTime at all.

It’s okay. The COW can look a bit cluttered sometimes and it can be hard to find some things. I wish there was one page where all of the Andrew Devis beginning AE stuff was listed instead of having it a bit scattered like it is.

Red Giant has a keying suite that might be better than Keylight for some shots and they have something called Composite Wizard in their effects suite that does light wrapping among lots of other things. They were having a big sale yesterday that extended into today, so if it’s still going, GET ON IT!
For some shots Keylight is best, for others, something else works better. Each shot is different.

There’s no reason to go that far back. Your CC subscription includes all versions from CS6 onward and they can all be installed alongside each other. If you have to go back at all, I’d suggest the CC 2014 release.
That being said, CC 2017 should work fine for this. Can we see a screenshot of the import screen?
