[Colin Wood] ” may need to scrap the arrows that came with the diagram and redraw my own straight version for the purpose of animation?”

Yes. If you have your arrows going in a straight line inside a precomp, you can use offset-type effects to make them seamlessly loop and then bend it into any shape you would like with distortion effects. Might take a bit to get it set up, but quite powerful. The only hard part is the hard edges of the path. It’s a lot easier to get smooth paths!

Puppet Pin Tool? Make a straight line animation (that loops) and then make it the right shape with the Puppet Pin Tool.

Alternatively, use Mesh Warp/Bezier Warp, etc.

Bonus: text attached to the arrows will warp with them with either of these methods.

  • Or, at the very least update CC 2015 to its latest version 13.7.x

  • Yes, that would be the reason. ☺
Those problems were heard and addressed!
There are also a bunch of bugs in that version that have been fixed. I would HIGHLY recommend updating to the very latest version of CC 2017 (14.1.0). It is faster and better in every way from 13.5.0

  • What, exact, version number of AE are you using? Some of the behavior you describe sounds like issues that were fixed in the more recent versions.

I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying. Each clone brush stroke is one element. I don’t think there is any way around that. You need to manage your strokes as you go.

You could try using Mocha or even AE’s point tracker to track each piece and then kinda fake the rotation manually if needed.

Can we see what you have so far and some further description of what it is you’re not satisfied with?

Have you looked into the Set Matte effect?

Alternatively, you could use the Copy with Property Links option to make a second square shape that follows the first one and use it as a track matte for the bottom layer.
