I would be willing to bet that the scale of your logo that has the original mask isn’t 100%.

I don’t know about an ACTUAL reaction diffusion in AE with the built-in tools, but you can certainly get a similar look and feel. 11543_reactiondiffusion01copycc12.aep.zip
I didn’t try messing with Form (third party) or using CC Mr. Mercury to drive the growth (I don’t have time right now), or using Particle Playground (definitely don’t have time right now). All of which could be potentially useful paths to go down.
However, hopefully what I’ve provided will help you springboard off into some ideas.

So you’re saying when you preview your composition, everything is fine, but when you render it, it stops moving? That’s odd.
It’s probably to do with how far the layer has moved in comp space. There is a limit.

You are using the Advanced Lightning effect and not the obsolete Lightning effect, right?
Regardless, the effect generates on the layer source regardless of masks. If you are using the most current release of After Effects, the easiest thing to do would be to paste that mask onto a different solid and then, on your lightning solid, apply the Set Matte effect, point it at the new solid and set it to use the alpha of that layer after masks and effects. If you’re using an older version of AE, the same applies except that you will need to precompose the new layer with the mask (moving all the attributes, etc. into the precomp) and point the Set Matte effect at the new layer.
I would also highly recommend removing the glow that the lightning effect creates itself and create your own glow (after the Set Matte effect). It’ll look much better (even if you weren’t needing to mask it out). See the very recent lightning tutorial at VideoCopilot.net for some great tips on getting better-looking lightning.

If you look on the right side of the dribbble page, you can see the tags they put on the project. C4D was one of the tags, so, yes, they used Cinema 4D to make some of it.

You could use the Set Matte effect instead of making a layer a track matte. You can then keyframe the source of the matte.
Alternatively, split the layer once the animation is done and you’ll have the arm free and clear with no track matte! 🙂– The Great Szalam
