You can set your own keyboard shortcuts in recent versions of After Effects, by the way.
You can toggle between the comp panel and timeline panel with the \ key.
Once you’re in the effect controls panel and currently editing a property, you can tab between other keyboard-enterable effect parameters with the tab key. But, for things like color chips, you can’t tab to them.

Matching the darks is one of the most important things in visual effects compositing. If the blacks of your footage aren’t dark, but your VFX element is, you’re going to have issues.

Alternatively, you could use any of your favorite keying effects to pull a key from the object, reverse it (so you have just the object, and then apply a couple of color correction effects to turn it white. Then you would have a bit more control over what’s getting the color change and what isn’t (eliminating that halo you’ve currently got).

Drag your footage to the new comp button. Then, try doing your roto on that.
There are some things the Roto Brush is great for. But there are a lot of shots where tracking by hand (with several masks instead of just one) works better.
Mocha AE has some tools that can help, but Mocha Pro has more options. If you end up doing this kind of work a lot, it might behoove you to look into it.
