Me neither. I just know rendering directly out of AE resolves a LOT of issues. I don’t even bother trying to send it directly to AME.

  • Try installing the newest version of AE. (17.0.2). There is an option in the CC app that you can set so that it won’t interfere with your old version when you install a new one. (I have, like, 7 versions installed on one of my machines – no issues.)

See how the newer version behaves.

Try rendering out of AE’s render queue into an intermediate file like QuickTime with the ProRes codec. Then bring that resulting file into Adobe Media Encoder to make your MP4. See if that works better.

Have a null object constantly moving in y. (A time expression or a loopOut() expression could be useful here.)

When a note should be getting hit, put a square there and then parent it to the null object.

  • The Bezier Warp or Mesh Warp effects would do that. Actually, there are a number of effects in the Distort category that would be useful here.

There are a number of ways to do that sort of thing. In this case, I would suspect it’s clever use of the puppet pin tools.

AE has a number of other distortion effects that you can use to do things like this (bezier warp, mesh warp, etc.)

You have to make sure you initialize the puppet pin on a frame that has all of the alpha in it. Otherwise, it won’t make the right mesh.

I don’t have time to troubleshoot this right now (my machine is in the middle of a render), but in case you don’t get an answer here soon, you might also try the Creative COW expressions forum. The code-types tend to hang out there more. 🙂

Marc’s suggestion is correct. However, you couldn’t do this in 2015 when the thread first began. This feature was introduced relatively recently. 🙂

Also, what version of AE are you using? If it’s not 17.0.2, you might consider updating.
