    There are a number of ways to do that sort of thing. In this case, I would suspect it’s clever use of the puppet pin tools.

    AE has a number of other distortion effects that you can use to do things like this (bezier warp, mesh warp, etc.)

    You have to make sure you initialize the puppet pin on a frame that has all of the alpha in it. Otherwise, it won’t make the right mesh.
