Is the footage using an H.264 codec? If so, try transcoding it to ProRes first and then key the new ProRes file.

Maybe using Essential Graphics or Data Driven Animation would do what you want to do overall.

I really don’t understand the question. You can have comps in comps in comps with no issue. Just drop a comp from the project panel into an open comp.
You can place comps in folders in the project panel.

Sub-poly displacement would be the first thing I would try.

I don’t know if Red Giant’s plugins would work with an eGPU. AE uses whatever GPU is powering your display’s output for whatever it uses the GPU for, so Red Giant might also do that.
More RAM would be helpful. 32 is the recommended minimum. 16 is the bare minimum required.

True Comp Duplicator is not needed anymore in many cases. The newish feature of Essential Properties (formerly Master Properties) is way more powerful. It lets you have x number of copies of a comp with whatever values you choose editable! But, if you want to change the color of the background or a shape (or whatever), you don’t have to go back through all the duplicated comps to fix it since they’re all just unique copies of the same comp.
Seriously, if you haven’t checked it out, it’s super-powerful.
