what happened when you just tried it?
it makes no difference where the In or out point is the video, you just need to find the common frame. If on angle A it is 5 minutes in, and on angle b it is 3 minutes in. When you play it back the will be 2 minutes of black on angle A

You need to use compressor to convert these to m2v files.
They are already mpeg2 but not DVD compliant so this is your only choice.

The one thing that I would want to test before spending the money is the cards. If you have a good relationship with a rental house, try to test a different set of cards, SOmething may have messed with your cards at the same time, but if the battle is consistent with the those cards I would really want to see if they worked okay in another camera.

Line up the clips on v1 and v2, any time you want to see the video on v1 you cut out that section of v2.

That is because VGA 640×480 is a square pixel format and is not a RT resolution. Everything should be 720×480 (0.9 aspect ration for 4:3, or 1.2 for 16:9)
The aspect ration is another problem if you have 16:9 and 4:3.
NOTE, everything clip will need to be the same version of ProRes also. Then you match the sequence to the clip settings exactly.

SATA is a ton faster than FW800, and the drives can be raided together to give you even faster speed. This becomes very important if you are doing multi-cam editing. Getting and enclosure also gives you huge storage space, easy to build a 10TB Raid these days.
But SATA cards are about long in the tooth. SAS cards are more in style. They are more expensive and the enclosures are too but they give more speed and redundancy (RAID 5 as an example).
But I do have a SOnnet E4p card that I can sell, would make you a great deal if this is what you want. COntact me off list at onthecow (at) michaelangelodv (dot) com.

More and more apps are and will take advantage of more cores. Compressor can do virtual clusters (you need at lest 2GB/core of RAM. Programs like Magic Bullet Grinder (processes Canon clips) can encode one clip per core at the same time so a 12 core will process 12 clips in the same time as 8-core will 8 clips.
Eventually FCP, Motion and Color will take advantage of multiple cores (hopefully summer 2011).
So if you have the money the system stays stronger for a little longer.
But all that said the new 8-core will be able to do anything you throw at it. So there is not a right or wrong choice here. But you need to look at a system and not just pieces. I would not spend the extra $1500 and not get a good video monitoring card and monitor.

Oh course it is not my money I suggesting paying but I would get it repaired. Not know if it would fix the problem is a hard one to handle.
If the service dept test with your cards? Have you tried the cards in another camera? Have tried formatting the cards with software and not the camera? Is it just a formatting problem, as in, once the card does get formatted it works fine?
If you are honest about the camera having an issue it is worth next to nothing on the used market. Fixed you would get twice your money back.

Yes, great for video does not mean great for print. For print spec of 300 dpi you would need to limit the size of the image to 6×4. While you can get go results in PS going up 200% unless it is a prefectly focused image it would not get excepted in many magazines.
This is one of the areas that RED is king. If you are shooting in 4K you have the info for mag quality prints.

They you should be just using a computer monitor and not a TV.
