I had to mail my receipt also. I think this was required for the units purchased close to the beginning of Oct. Will be nice to have a card when it comes. Right now I just have a Firestore.

In FCP your timeline and your footage need to be anamorphic, if you capture the footage without this setting you can change it in the bin just be clicking the anamorphic field it the columns. This is one of the only things you can change after capture but you need to do it before you put it in your timeline.
When you get to compressor you need to make sure the aspect ratio is set to 16:9. Then when you put it in a track it should be set up as 16:9 Letterbox. Not 16:9 Pan and Scan or both, unless you have edited in a way that if the left and right are cropped off the full screen 4:3 image is still okay. The Letterbox or Pan and Scan after the 16:9 tells the DVD player how to handle a 16:9 track if it is hooked up to a 4:3 TV.

The only way to guarantee this is for you to get a guarantee from every viewer that they will only view it on a 16:9 TV. DVD players will automatically letterbox an anamorphic movie when hooked up to a 4:3 TV. -
When you capture a tape shot with the squeeze setting or with the anamorphic lens you will have the same format in FCP (or QT) 720×480 anamorphic. But the squeeze mode has been electronically cropped and resized in the camera where as the lens is using the entire CCD and no upscaling is being done. So you will get a better (sharper image) The lens has its down side but you do get a better image. Lenses #1 down side is lens flare.

Have you downloaded that lastest AJA drives for your card, I have the Kona3 and SD to SD now has option to letterbox just like up and down convert.

If they are on a tape they are 30fps so you would first capture them as such and the do the next step, if they are just files you can use compressor to export to the new codec and you can set the new frame rate.

The question is, do you need an editing sysem now. No future technology can make you money now. I purchased a Quad G5 (2.5) last year and never looked back. Everything I purchased (except for the Kona 3 cards) is now faster and cheaper but my system was paid for with a single project and it continues to make me money even though it is not the latest and greatest. Just because something new is faster doesn’t make the old obsolete, just a little slower. If fact there are a lot of people making a living with G4 (but it is time for them to upgrae). If it really hurts to see new stuff come out after you buy, wait until the new stuff comes out and buy right away, then you may get 6 months of happiness before the next round rolls out.
If you need a system now, since you said you sold your old one, there is not much history of Apple releasing a new high end system before Christmas, normally Feb or NAB or WDC.

Is there a reason you don’t want to update to the .2, if you have 5.1 all you have to do is download the patches.
[Robinson] “When will fcp make backward compatibility a reality??” This a real workflow issue when dealing with freelance editors but I really don’t see this happening anytime soon.

Check out https://www.imagineproducts.com/hdlog.htm it is a little pricey (and ugly) but I think it would give you better print outs without doing a screen capture.

Do you have to exact TC on our tape, like have the program start at 01:00:00;00? If not going a print to tape is a lot easier to do and the camera will generate the TC.
If you have to do an ETT can you list your steps. and is the timeline playing on your computer screen.
One thing to check first is in the Audio/Video Settings A/V Device tab make sure the Different for E/P TT is not checked or is set correctly. This has gotten me a couple of times.

One stream, no, it should play just fine unless you are on an old G4 system. Think about it, if you drop in a HD clip onto a hd seq. what would it render, a HD clip. So the red line is a red flag that clip and seq do not match as stated above.
Question for the others – if Kevin is completely done editing, could he take the finished reference movie into Cinema Tools and remove the pulldown that he has added in because of the 29.97 timeline? Or even using Shake to conform to 23.98? Would that be safer than working within FCP?
