April 4, 2007 at 9:43 pm in reply to: Kona3 to Io producing an audio pop

Audio is not peaking – peaks at -6db, professionally mastered music.

This process was a mad rush and I didn’t catch it. Went back and there are the pops on the audio with the SD timeline. Audio is fine on the HD timeline.

Here is the comment I got from the guy that makes a final master-

“We had several audio pops (at least 10) on the Randy submaster tape. Very strange. Once I delivered the finished master, Dick Connell took it into session at to make repairs. The audio engineer said the waveform on those frames just dipped to zero so he had to repaint the waveform to fix it. I just wanted to let you know before you output the next show.”

This is all greek to me but maybe helpful to you guys.

P2 cards, both 4 and 8 are hard to come by new, mostly likely 16 MB cards will be out by NAB. You can get them on eBay, If you can wait I would wait, I would think the 16GB cards will sell for what the 8GB were selling for.

You really cannot fault B&H for this, they need to keep selling and are normally in the dark as much as the buyer is with regards to when new products we be released.

April 3, 2007 at 5:43 pm in reply to: Mixing Varicam/HVX202/Kona3/1400 VTR

I have done this in NTSC world just fine. I shoot with (3) Varicams, (2) HVX200 with P2 cards and (1) HVX200 with firestore. Shot 720P @ 24P, so the Varicams put redunant frames on the tape since it only records in “Over 60” mode, these frames are removed on capture into FCP via 1400 deck over firewire. The P2 were recorded 24PN to cards so I just import them into FCP and they are ready to go. The FIrestore now does the pulldown removal on capture so they act just like the P2 cards on import. Doing these sets all footage is in the FCP bin at 23.98P and used with multiclip editing just fine. The one thing in your work flow that you will probably not in for capture is the Kona3 Card, but it will help on with editing and maybe post.

March 30, 2007 at 6:44 am in reply to: Any tricks to remove/reduce vibration…

The vibration is from the amps (Bass) I’m talking big arenas, When I use hard cameras with real lenses 66x and above these are normally just fine, they have major stabilization in them but not all clients can afford them so sometime we have to use Varicams with 22x ENG style lenses. I always try to do the 2 platform set up for a camera, I’m amazed on how many people cannot understand why the is important and have had staging companies just swap (2) 4×4 for a 4×8 and wonder why I get pissed.

But what I’m looking for is a trick for a dumping system to reduce or remove the vibration.

I’m pretty sure that DVCPro50 gives you 4 channels of audio also.

Whenever I have a real concern about audio I use a shotgun mic on a pole or Lav mics. For run and gun I use the Pan external mic. One thing to note – the builtin mic is always on (except for DV25) if you use channel 1 or 2 with an external mic the builtin goes to channels 3 and 4 so it is a good backup. If you need to capture real dialog the builtins probably won’t cut it.

I went with a pelican 1560 (with wheels) just over airline carry-on but I plan to carry it on. I use this full time, won’t even think of going back to a softcase.

In in I have cut out foam for Camera, Firestore, (2) Extra camera batterys, (1) extra firestore battery, (2) Wireless Mic systems, Big catch all for cables and such. The only thing is the external mic cannot be attached to the camera so I have to put it on before I use it. Protect and price is great,
