Just got an 8-core in and I went with the X1900 seems like ATI plays better with same of the new features and a lot of software using the GPU instead of the CPU so this is the value for your bucks. AE and Motion will thank you.

NEVER upgrade ram through the Apple store, I got the same RAM apple puts in for 1/2 the price an extra 8GB (4x2GB) for $1000 to give me a total of 9GB (vs. $2100 from Apple and you lose 1GB) macsales.com is where I have bought RAM for all my systems. Get at least 4GB and remember you don’t have to get this all at once, you can add as you get work.

Also don’t upgrade the HD either, order 500 or 750GB drives from mwave.com. then stripe these 3 drives together for an awesome internal storge. You can get (3) 500GB drives for under $400 Maxtor (Pro line). All you need is “bare” drives since you don’t need mounting hardware or cables.

I’m specing out a new Mac Pro also, I would go for the fastest processor and then I add RAM as I get extra money. You really need at least 3 GB of RAM to start off with (add 2-1GB sticks). Also if you plan to do a lot of graphics, motion, AE, combustion the extra $250 for the x1900 is probably a good thing to get.

I buy all my RAM from macsales.com. They now sell the same sticks as Apple for about 1/2 the price.

One correction to an above post, DVCProHD is very CPU intensive, but needs less drive through put compared to Uncompressed (even SD uncompressed). The stronger the codec the more processor needed.

Yeah, this is pretty confusing, is this true only in the HD world. In SD 29.97 and 23.98 are in fact always DF?

I just got one of these in, hooked up to the Kona3. I’m going to a Apple 23″ Love it! works great and has a 2:1 for SD that is really nice. It was about 1/2 the price of the AJA. Nice this is I now can monitor the embedded audio from the Kona. It came with a DVI to HDMI adapter so I would think it would work fine.

The “Capture” I’m talking about is into the Io from the Kona3 system, no deck involved at this time. Original HD Capture was from tape to Kona3 system but that audio is not used, I get a Aiff file from Audio engineer that is from his ProTools record.

No it was not a mp3 file.

I’m using embedded audio one cable between Kona3 and Io.

The HD timeline on the G5 has good audio.
