  • Am I screwed? – 4Gig cards gone?

Alright, I am usually very good about doing all my research before buying a product and in a way I did before taking the 200 plunge. But that’s really not the point. I purchased a new HVX200 from BH Photo that came with 2, 4 gig P2 cards. It was listed as “Accepting Orders,” but in my experience with BH that meant that I may have to wait several extra days for the camera. That was really no problem, so I ordered it. Well, now I have my new camera, triposd, mic, bag and P2Store and guess what, that’s right no cards. So I go poking around and looks like this is a big issue. Does anyone know the truth? Are 4 gig cards gone forever? Are stores really waiting until NAB to re-stock? If so, BH really pulled one on me this time. They are listing the cards as being available 7-14 days from purchase. Anyone have any ideas? BH is closed until next week and I am about to go a little nuts.

    Thanks

My understanding is that 4 GB cards have been gone for awhile. The 8 GB cards were being given away with a camera purchase so as to deplete their stock before release of the new 16 GB in 2 weeks at NAB. 32 GB cards will be out by the first of the year.

P2 cards, both 4 and 8 are hard to come by new, mostly likely 16 MB cards will be out by NAB. You can get them on eBay, If you can wait I would wait, I would think the 16GB cards will sell for what the 8GB were selling for.

You really cannot fault B&H for this, they need to keep selling and are normally in the dark as much as the buyer is with regards to when new products we be released.

While I will agree that I probably should have done a little more research on the availability of the the cards, I can hardly agree that BH bears no responsibility here. They willingliy took my money for two 4 gig cards that it seems will never be available. This in my mind is deceptive. Now what I hope will happen if there is in fact a shortage, that BH will honor that payment and send me an 8 gig card that they apparently still have in stock (according to their website). But to say that they have no fault here is wrong. They have almost $1000 of my money, and that is wrong.

In my experience with B & H Photo Video, they have been professional and their customer service is usually top quality. I have been involved in several situations where I returned merchandise for refunds and haven’t had any trouble.

If you can wait until passover is finished, I am sure that if you call customer service, you can probably get the situation resolved without any problem.

I hope the 8’s don’t go away. When I bought the camera package I spent all my money and only got the 4 gig because it was $650. I want to get another card and I don’t mind the 4’s because one card fits well on a DVD-R. If they do get rid of the 4’s I hope the 8’s take over the 4’s price at $650. To only have the 16’s as the low end card for $1300 would suck. They need to have a card at half that price.

I have a few friends in my same postion where they could afford the one time splurge on the camera and a 4 gig card. But buying more cards is hard. So I hope they still have the 4 gig price on cards no matter what the lowest is.

That has been my experience with BH as well. I think that I just needed to vent a little, I was actually hoping that Jan might respond about the future of the 4 gig card. The more I think about it I’m sure that Bh can either get more 4 gig cards or they will make it right in some way. I just responded the way that any kid would if you gave them their new toy on Christmas with no batteries. Oh well, no big stuff coming until after Passover so I will get by.

    Thanks
