This may be a long shot since you are seeing it on a couple of systems but check your RT settings. When using Unlimited RT see if both quality and frame rate is set to Dynamic. One time I changed the setting to Video – Full and Frame Rate – 1/2 and it doing just that. It took me a little time to figure out what I had done.

What camera are you using. You listed DVCAM HD, did you mean DVCProHD for a Panasonic camera?

I only have a HVX so I have no tape option for HD but I would love to be shooting both, having the tape as a backup would be great, you would be getting the best of both worlds. The one thing I would do is to figure out a recapture from tapes workflow after editing with the Firestore footage. If you had the camera’ TC set on free run and set the firestore to ext TC I would think there would not be a problem. The one area to keep in mind would be if you were taking advantage of the pre-record feature on the FS, you might end up using footage that is not on the tape.

The major benefit as you stated of capturing a tape is the flexibility of codec choice but if you like DVCProHD the cost savings will add up quickly.

The nice thing about SD 16:9 anamorphic is this is one setting that can be set after you capture (or imported into FCP) All that is happening is it changing the shape (aspect ratio) of the pixels, 4:3 and 16:9 are still 720×480. So yes to make it easier you just copy the Easy Setup and check the anamorphic box. If you forgot to do this all you have to do is click the anamorphic column in FCP’s bin.

First why are you going from DVCProHD to HDV, I understand that the file size is so much smaller but you are going to a highly compressed codec to be the master of other highly compressed formats.

Think if you eliminate HDV from the workflow you will see much better results with your DVDs. Remember it will never look as good as the original.

I always let Photoshop do the downconvertions. DVD is 720×480 (I also set the dpi to 72).

I use a crop to size so I set the crop tool to 720×536 (this is make it correct for non-square pixels that video uses. Then I resize the image to 720×480 (this will look wrong in photoshop but once on a DVD it will look correct on playback.

I prefer saving as tiffs also, and always set to uncompressed.

Simple process and the second step can be recorded as an action so you can fly through a batch of photos.

I think you have answered your own question, no money, doesn’t have to be good. Seems like a no brainer. Just send a NTSC disc. Remember every computer can playback PAL and NTSC DVDs.

Quality should be fine and it sounds like a new DVD in PAL would cost less then what you should charge for a PAL convertion.

I guess I got stuck from the SD pull down removal days. Which I think is FW only but I could be wrong there also.

With DVCProHD is it best to capture via firewire when you are staying in that codec because it will removed those frames but via SDI it will not.

Try Tools > DVCProHD frame rate converter.

This should remove the extra frames but the files are not reduced like they are when it is done on capture.

Good article but didn’t spinning logos and symbols get outlawed in 1999 🙂

[Sam Waldorf] “I could not shoot 24PN then use firewire 400 to transfer it to a computer for editing in Final cut 5? “

Sure you could, FCP it was called P2 import (if I remember right) these clips are true 23.98 so there is no extra frames to remove.

[Sam Waldorf] “and with 24PA, do I treat it any differently than I would just 24p on the XL2? as far as capture settings, timeline options, etc.?”
24pA is the scheme that panasonic uses in an interlace environment and on ingest remove this pull down to once again give you 29.98 progressive frames. Panasonic gives you the option of pA on 1080i and 480i.
