Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Jumpy Playback

I have been using Mac computers and FCP to edit HDV footage for the past year, and have had very nice results. A problem has developed within the last two months. I am getting jumpy playback on my clips. My original footage is not jumpy, and when I output from FCP back to tape, it is not jumpy. When I go back to past projects in FCP that never looked jumpy, they now have jumpy playback in shots where there is motion. It is most noticeable in shots where I have panned. Even when I view the clips in QuickTime, outside of FCP, they are jumpy. I tried playing the clips on a variety of different machines in the Apple Store including their most powerful, and the clips are still jumpy. I am wondering if new updates to QuickTime in the last two months might have affected the playback of HDV footage. Even though I can output smooth footage, it is distracting to have the jumpy playback during editing.

This may be a long shot since you are seeing it on a couple of systems but check your RT settings. When using Unlimited RT see if both quality and frame rate is set to Dynamic. One time I changed the setting to Video – Full and Frame Rate – 1/2 and it doing just that. It took me a little time to figure out what I had done.

I just now tried your suggestion, and it did not help. I also played around with other combinations of settings with no luck. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Sounds like your HD might be having some trouble. Have you tried performing basic maintenance on it? Tried the clips playing back on your native HD?

If you are asking about the HDV camera that I film with, it is working fine. I originally thought the camera might be the problem, but tests have revealed that it is fine.

I wasn’t referring to your camcorder. HD=Hard Drive in this case. Sorry if that was not understood.

Have you performed basic maintenance (by using Disk Utility) on the hard drive where the clips reside? Are the clips on an external drive or your internal drive? Have you tried copying the clips to your Mac HD and tried playing them back there?

    Hope this is clearer.

My internal and external hard drives are both in good shape. I did use Disk Utility and all is well. My clips are on the external drive. I just copied a jumpy clip to the internal hard drive and I still have the same problem with playback there. At the Apple Store, we also tried putting problem clips on several of their computers and still had jumpy playback. Since the original footage is fine and the output is fine, it really seems like a problem with the way QT is dealing with the HDV footage, but if I am the only one having this problem, then maybe that is not it either. The other factor pointing to QT is that fact that clips in past projects are now jumpy when they were not before, but if there is something else causing the problem and someone has a quick fix, I will be very happy.

I am having the same issue with FCP on my machine tonight. I’ve never had jumpy playback before tonight. I played the clips both from my internal HD and an external HD with the same problem. The QT clips play smooth outside of FCP. I did download some new codecs today trying to get an AVI file to convert properly in QT Pro, but I ended up not keeping any of them. Could this be related to the playback in FCP? I appreciate your help troubleshooting this.

I still have not been able to find any solution to the jumpy, jittery playback of my HDV clips in FCP. I posted the problem on several forums and found at least one other person with the same problem, but still no solutions. I had given up on finding a solution, but I will take one more stab at it this week when I go into Apple for a One to One session. I did not specifically download any new Codecs, but I have consistently done all software updates, and I am wondering if something in one of those changed my system so that I no longer have smooth HDV playback. As I said before, my playback was great up until a few months ago.

I just found a solution to the jumpy playback problem!!! I went to Network in System Preferences and turned off my airport, and now everything plays smoothly! I do not know why this works. I never had to do this before. As an additional test, I turned the air port back on and clips were jittery again. I have agonized over this problem for more than a month, and am happy to find a simple solution!

That’s amazing. I turned off my airport and it is smooth again as well. Wierd. Thanks for posting your find. I greatly appreciate it.
