The question is going to be, can your NTSC monitor accept a 23.98 singnal? Most cannot.

The IoHD (and all AJA cards) will add the pulldown as it plays out.

[Curt Massof] “will it look good”
well that really depends on you, is it shoot, edited and finished well? but you are probably asking about the pulldown, it does a great job.

[Aynsley Baldwin] “2) Is there a way to bypass the use of a Firestore and record straight to an FCP editing system (whilst backing up to tape)?”

It is no wheres near as portable but a lot of people are using the AJA IoHD to MacBookPros to capture ProResHD. You will probably want to use the software VTR so you get the camera’s TC.

Well most likely the camera is what shot 29.97 which is the normal frame rate for video. Most menus just round it up to 30, just like they like 23.98 as 24.

You would have to readjust the timing in a program like Compressor, Shake or Motion. but if you are coming back to video with your composites 29.97 is what you would want.

The resolution is what PAL is, NTSC is 720×480 on a DVD, no way around that. If they are saying that NTSC DVD is fine and your movie is NTSC I would stay with that. Converting NTSC to PAL can be done with compressor but get good results is another thing. Also if you don’t have a PAL player and TV you really cannot check to see what you are really sending them. (A computer can play a PAL disc but it also can mask encoding issues.)

Region 0 makes the disc playable in every region so it is the safest way to go.

LTO 3 or 4 drive and tapes seem to be winning out on the archive method, they are pretty fast and good $/GB and a lot more secure than BU to hard drives.

Easy way to think about the RAW P2 files is to think of them as tapes, if you would keep the tape if it was shot on it, you would BU to LTO the RAW footage, this way it can be transfered into any NLE down the road.

There are several post that do into it more but that is my take on it.

  • If you want to use QMaster feature you cannot (at least I have never been able to) export the timeline from FCP, instead make a ref movie and bring that into Compressor. SInce it is speed you are after this will be the most effective in giving you this.

Totally agree with your the above post but if you have to go to DBeta… your output card adds the pull down as it plays out so there is really nothing specially you have to do. Of course the tape’s TC and the timeline’s TC will not match because of the added frames in going up to the 30 frames.

The Frame Buffer needs to be set on Secondary (525i29.97). The way you have it set the down converting is happening to the video out.
