The way to get the best quality encode, especially from a high compression codec like HDV is to export to Compressor from the FCP timeline. This will take longer and ties up FCP but it does do a better job. Also if you can use CBR at 6-6.5 Mbps, this will give you the best that compressor has to offer. You can try a short clip to test out the results before doing a really long encode. CBR doesn’t need much time at all but it you have to go with VBR it is always best to do at least 10 minutes in order to give the VBR something to work with.

-12 dB lowers whatever it thinks is dialog, I always use -31. Note most DVDs are mastered/normalized to 0 dB so if you are putting in a normal retail DVD and then yours movie has peaks between -12 and -6 it is going to sound low. Audio for video going to DVD should be mastered differently then what you are putting to tape.

ac4 was a typo, no such thing. ac3 will do the trick. and yes you would use this instead of the aiff.

I think that is a proof of concept video. I’m sure stuff like this is coming sooner than later, I know a lot of people looking for motion HDR.

I jump in on the Magic Bullet side.
I think Magic Bullet Looks works best when you apply it to the entire movie or at least to an entire scene. So you would want all the clips in the movie or scene to be balanced to one another, then you would apply the film effect. If you want to make your footage 24P MB has a new program called Frames that will do this.
But key is to have a unified look (that does not mean that all the shots are exactly the same but similar shoots with the scene are balanced to one another.

You can try running it through compressor.

Still pages should start out as 864 x 480 pixels (square) and when done you should resize them before bringing them into DVDSP to 720×480 (always 72 dpi)

DVD handles mix aspect video just fine (in different title sets of course). So just drop them in, the one thing you have to do is decide how the 16:9 will get displayed on a 4:3 TV, the most common is to choose 16:9 Letterboxed, which is what gives you the black top and bottom bars but the video still has the 16:9 look. If you choose Pan and Scan it will center crop the video on 4:3 which is not normally wanted unless graphics and framing has taken this into account.
If you are working with an older version of Photoshop you are off with the canvas at 1024×576 and design your menu (everything will look correct) when done resize the image to 720×576 (it will now look distorted) bring this file into DVDSP and choose 16:9 and it will look correct again. The latest versions Photoshop do this conversion for you, you just start a new file as PAL/DV Widescreen.
