I didn’t get the name of the software but there was something at NAB that would sync via the audio. This would probably do the trick for you as long as both cameras have the same audio. Google software to sync clips in FCP. Make sure the producer pays for the software or your time to do the syncing.
Hopefully they are the same frame rate. I love low budget jobs that the client thinks it is helpful to use there little DV camera to go with a HVX or even the old DVX shooting and editing 23.98.

There should be Column headers Name | Parameter | Nav above the Video Filters, if you click and hold on the right side line you can drag it to the right and it makes the column wider.

Not sure if the HPX170 is the same display as the HVX200 but the 200 is a bit confusing because the display setting is 1080i/24p(A). But it is 1080p23.98 when you ingest the footage. Took me a while to convince one person that it was truly progressive. It writes as segmented frames but it is a true progressive frame when it is put back together (which is what happens on ingest)

Shot 24pN you will get 40 minutes on a 16 GB card and 10 minutes on the 4 GB. If you go to 720p30p still use pN mode, you get twice the record time over 30p.
Also hire an experienced DIT!! There are good ones all around, often I will bring my computer and card adapter so you can be shooting with the camera while recording to the other cards, no extra cards would be needed.
Not only will they help you with the P2 workflow on set they can assist in setting up the camera.

[Chris Reason] “TV which is set to auto aspect ratio” What is sending the TV the info on the aspect ratio? There is nothing that I could think of that could tell what is a black mask and not just part of the video.
I think is a TV/DVD player setting mismatch.
Test get a movie DVD that is not true 16:9 (most are not) and how is that displayed, are the black bars gone?

what is IT, the export, the client’s need?If the client needs a SD movie to go on a DVD, will they be doing the m2v encoding, if so what system are they on, which will determine want codec is best.
Also if your animation is truly 30 fps it will need to be retimed, DVD video has to be 29.97, not a big deal but your audio needs to be retimed to match.

Go back and start with a better codec out of Lightwave, HDV is the worse possible choice for graphics or animation.
10-bit Uncompressed SD would be a great and safe choice and will go to m2v (for the DVD) the best.
