You will get 2:3 interlace artifacts when going out to NTSC – This is especially noticeable on horizontal lines – try making them a little thicker if you can – softening the edges can also help. You can also try a very small amount of Gaussian blur as well.

You go to the reformat tab of the effects palette and drop a preset 16:9 letterbox on the top track.

Here is an example of one of the outputs from Avid FilmScribe. In this example, it exports everything out as HTML with all events hyperlinked for the different list types and common events. This was for a documentary feature called Cinematographer Style that I post supervised. The SCAN list was the one we used in the final step for the DI process. FilmScribe also outputs plain printed lists as well as TAB delimited lists for machine to machine communication. For example, the Arri Laser software can take a TAB version of the SCAN list to drive the scan process. Similar processes are used at e-Film, etc.

Unless the transfer facility wants to spend the time matching timecode to camera rolls (and charge you for it) a pull list with an EDL is the best way to go since all that work has been done and tracked by the editing system.

OK… let me more precise. 😉

It can take a verrry long time, especially if you are doing an entire feature. It is recreating all the frames in the effect on a pixel per pixel basis and first goes through an analysis phase then the render phase. But it is end up being a true progressive source with 2:3 puilldown as though you had shot 24fps and transferred to NTSC. I use the FluidMotion to retime interlace materials as a frame converter to other frames rates – like adding a shot that was done interlace into a progressive project.

There are other solutions out there that would work as well – I was suggesting the one that came with the system so it was not extra $$ out of your pocket – just minutes/hours off your life… Look at Magic Bullet, Boris FX, DV Filmmaker, etc.
