I have an anamorphic source that I am going to need to output at 16×9 letterbox. Whats the best way to do that in avid? Do I change the vertical size to 75% in 3dPIP? And then do I apply the 1.85 film mask crop? Do I nest the 3D PIP?

Also I need to apply another format 14x(10?), a ratio I have not worked wirh, is that PAL?

You go to the reformat tab of the effects palette and drop a preset 16:9 letterbox on the top track.

Resize 75 % does the trick. I normally crop off a few pixels bottom and top (either crop or a static title with black bars bottom and top)

14:9 is a compromise that BBC uses to be able to reformat almost anything. Check BBC specs for more details, and ask the client for more details as it can mean letterbox or anamorph…
(if it is anamorph you have to set your titles away from the left/right edge as there will be a slight center cut)

that’s what i wanted to know for a long time!
if i just scale the image down in height to 75% then i always see a litte ‘step’ in the middle of the picture at the top or bottom (i know its because of the interlaced lines of a frame). so i have to crop it for 2 pixels (one is not enough as i experienced) top and bottom. this kills some more lines of my imaget and this results in a not 100% true 16:9 letterbox format.

do i really have to downscale it by 75%, because i think, what i see is an underscan image which shows more than the viewers will ever see. so shouldn’t it be enough to scale it down about 85% (i don’t know if this is the correct percentage)

would be cool if someone ever handeled this ‘problem’
