I don’t quite understand the need to go from 1:1 do 120 to avoid long GOP errors since neither resolution is long GOP to start with. I am assuming you mean uncompressed HD when you say 1:1 (and not native source codec). Have you tried exporting a QT reference of either the 1:1 or the 120? Is there an image there? Can you encode from there to your final distribution format?

Was it recorded to hot? I find that without a “pad” of 20db or so, it does not work. Recording directly form a TC generator without it is not advised.

Assuming all audio was imported, and not accessed under AMA, have you tried duplicating the sequence then removing all video tracks first?

Try the green/yellow mode for editorial as H.264 does take some computational power to decode. Once edited, render/transcode final sequence to a native DNxHD codec for finishing and mastering.

When extracting 16:9 from 4:3 it is not as easy to do the “center 1/3rd untouched” kind of thing since you are looking at the top and bottom of the images which doesn’t work to well with people shots… works better when extracting 4:3 from 16:9.
Use the pan & scan effect under the reformat tab. It is a quick and easy way to to a re-composition of the program for a different aspect ratio. Read the directions on how to divide the effect for your picture track first. Make sure it is set to HQ and you should be fine.

What kind of drive and connection are the files on? Also, are you in green/green mode?

Please check the Avid Knowledgebase for this known issue. It is because of the graphics card overlay uses a different mechanism for playback. The knowledgebase can help you adjust to the proper settings.
