  • Read Audio Timecode not working

Posted by Uli Kunkel on October 6, 2010 at 8:57 pm

I’m using Media Composer 5.0.3, and it seems that the read audio timecode function is broken in it. It crashes the app every time. I tried using the function on version 2.8.0 of Media Composer, and while it didn’t crash the application, the function didn’t work at all.

The footage was shot on a 5D and the timecode was allegedly run into one of the audio channels. Does anyone know if the way the 5D records picture and sound (H264) if it destroys the audio TC information when creating the file? I can think of no other reason why “Read Audio Timecode” wouldn’t put anything into the “Aux TC” column in the bin.

    Thanks.

Was it recorded to hot? I find that without a “pad” of 20db or so, it does not work. Recording directly form a TC generator without it is not advised.

I don’t think so. I did a test last night with it using Media Composer 4.0.2. It worked.

Definitely a bug with 5.0.3. Looking at Avid forums, it appears that this is a bug they’re aware of.

It works for me on 5.02 Windows…
And i must admit it has improved, it no longer needs individual Reelnames in case of TC breaks.
(well, it is usable now 🙂

I forgot if indeed a Reelname present is still required.

For Michael, why on earth would it not work with hot recordings?
LTC is volume independent… (unless you zero it out…)

    Bouke –

That’s what I was told – probably meant over-modulated to the point nothing could be decoded. v5 brought the changes to not need source reel for TC read.

    Michael,
Please kick the guy who told you this.
    LTC CANNOT be overmodulated.

Q What happens if you overmodulate a signal with all force before smoke comes out your system?
A It becomes a blockwave where all detail is vanished

    Q What is LTC?
    A A blockwave without any detail…
(well, not really according to specs, but probably the rise time is defined to let analogue equipment live longer. Has nothing to do with the actual encoded signal. Specs were written before the first man on the moon…)

As a matter of fact, my LTC reading routines amplify LTC by 5000% before decoding it, ensuring a perfect blockwave.
