Got an 80 minute movie all 4×3, combination of original film, video and animation. Client would like to see about converting to 16×9.
Purpose of the conversion is for streaming and playing from computer or DVD to projected screen.

Pillars or wings would be out. Standard zoom in is a possibility. Could go through entire movie and zoom and adjust each scene for best position. However, am afraid of what the Avid DVE might do to quality of image.

Wouldn’t want to do a simple stretch, but perhaps an “elastic stretch” where the center 3rd of image is untouched and the outside 3rds would be stretched. I know some monitors do this kind of thing.

Also, for streaming version, should pixels be squared up before or after the chosen conversion process?

Any ideas, comments, etc…thanks in advance.

When extracting 16:9 from 4:3 it is not as easy to do the “center 1/3rd untouched” kind of thing since you are looking at the top and bottom of the images which doesn’t work to well with people shots… works better when extracting 4:3 from 16:9.

Use the pan & scan effect under the reformat tab. It is a quick and easy way to to a re-composition of the program for a different aspect ratio. Read the directions on how to divide the effect for your picture track first. Make sure it is set to HQ and you should be fine.
