RED job w/ MC5 – MXF vs. QT?
Posted by David Jahns on September 30, 2010 at 5:05 pmWe’ve just upgraded to MC5, and I’m interested in new AMA workflow options.
Our shop has both Avid & FCP, and we choose platforms based on editor’s perference, finish plan (sometimes in-house w/ Color & FCP, sometimes at an external Flame facility).
We’re considering trying to offline in Avid using ProRes QTs from REDCINE-X, then finish in Color / FCP / ProTools.
I’ve read about having to transcode final sequences to MXF before creating AAF audio finish files – any other downsides to working in ProRes QT media for offline?
Any other issues with exporting EDLs, XMLs from Avid w/ QT media?
Thanks for any help, Cow-pokes!

Other than you can’t? No. I mean, YOU CAN, export a QT movie. But you can’t export an AAF from a project using ProRes or QT footage brought in via AMA. And Avid doesn’t do XML.

Yeah, as I said above, you can’t even export an AAF for FCP. Only works with Avid media. If you plan on using the Avid to offline, you need to figure out how to access the footage via AMA, transcode to an offline editing codec, like DNxHD 36…then export an EDL or something to then reconform the cut in FCP so you can go to Color.
HOW? Got me…Just came in to say that footage accessed via AMA cannot be exported via AAF for anything.

October 1, 2010 at 7:54 amWhy use ProRes transcodes for an offline edit in Avid? If you use Metafuze to create MXF media for Avid, then your EDL and AAF exports will work like a dream. If you look at avidscreencast.com there are a few videos that talk about this workflow, including the correct procedure for getting your EDL to Avid afterwards. Or you could even just AMA to the r3d files and then transcode what you use before generating your EDL for Color.

October 1, 2010 at 3:37 pmBasic rules:
You cannot export an AAF or AFE from media being used under AMA. Once transcoded, you can export AAF and AFE. You can export an EDL as well as an XML which is done via Avid FilmScribe at this time. But just because it is XML does not mean that is just works. XML is just a description format of the tags and the metadata itself.

October 1, 2010 at 6:16 pmI’m actually trying to just gather info here about how it all works with the new AMA. The first post here was just one possible scenario – but there are dozens more…
Sometimes we take over a project that started elsewhere in FCP, but our editor would prefer to work in Avid, etc… Some of our editors only know FCP – if a project was started in Avid using AMA Quicktimes, maybe they could import an EDL into FCP and work with the same media, etc…
I’m just trying to learn the tradeoffs between flexibility of AMA quicktime and stability & functionality of MXF media.
So far – render times appear equal, and our Octo-Core MacPros have had no problem playing ProRes, so it appears to be a reasonable option, but I’m reasonably sure the best practice would be to use MXF as your standard Avid workflow, and use AMA QTs when special circumstances arise.
Thanks for the tips, everyone!
