  • Media Composer defaults to best quality while real time, but may not be the best quality overall. So changing those parameters may end up with a better conversion.

On a somewhat related note, I blogged about motion effect differences on progressive sources in a progressive project type:

You can’t use “embedded” in Resolve for REEL ID as Media Composer does not support that when you AMA link later for the conform. Use “file name or clip name (can’t remember exact working, not in front of Resolve at the moment).

AMA link will always use Source File and not Tape, but you can relink between columns since v7.

50fps to play back at 30fps is 60% of original speed.

If you use the Google version, you need to sign in, if you download it, you need Microsoft Excel.

Although my blog is mainly about sample rates and pitch correction, the spreadsheet does also offer you a percentage calculation given two frame rates:

Media Composer does not offer any source side “interpret as” frame rate changes like Adobe Premiere Pro (and possibly others, but I don’t use them). There is some source side speed change coming in 8.3 related to this, but won’t be any arbitrary rate.

Offline editing is pretty straightforward as that will almost always entail a transcode in Media Composer for additional performance, layers, and potentially multicam etc.

I have been testing 8.3 and overall I don’t see much advantage in offlining at a transcoded 4K (1t 1/4 frame for performance) as it ends up being the same storage requirements as DNxHD 36. Considerations are whether you are planning a 4K finish, or should I say “need to” finish at 4K, versus 2K, etc. that only has a play if you want to have room to re-compose a shot etc. If you shoot 4K for a 4K finish, then it falls into the usual resize type algorithm.

You can still offline at 1080 DNxHD 36, and conform back to masters at UHD. So it may end up being a wash, project type.

DNxHD 36 can play off a USB drive pretty easily as far as offline goes and you get 62 hours per 1TB of storage. If he RAID is also holding camera masters, then plan accordingly. But you will still want another set of drives or LTO to backup camera originals.

You will want to make submasters of the corrected GoPro unless you want that look – make a high quality Proes that matches your BMD sources (assuming you’re shooting ProRes Film Log).

Sync in Media Composer with double system audio for quality – make a 35mm, 4 perf if you want 1/4 frame sync. I have lots of sync, and other workflow considerations on my blog at https://www.24p.com/wordpress

Seems to depend on resolution. At 4K, it is ultrawide. I also noticed that all the frame rates seem to be whole numbers and not fractional such as 23.976 and 29.97 for NTSC based countries. Another feature in 8.3 is the ability to change the frame rate to project rate resulting in a frame for frame (no need to do console commands, etc.). So if truly 24fps for example, in a 23.976 project, you can go to source setting and set it to 23.976. Any audio will be a sample rate conversion, and there is no pitch correction on source, but can be dealt with on the timeline.

One of my blogs has a spreadsheet to calcualte sample rate and semitones to retime audio and pitch:

You will still most likely be transcoding to a DNx flavor, but in the case of MC 4K, it will be a DNxHR resolution as announced at IBC this past September. I think H.264 performance will be an issue regardless of it being at 1920×1080 or UHD.

As far as GoPro, does it need to be lens corrected beforehand? There are no source side fixes for that, and you would end up using a Boris effect (if you have it) to correct for wide-angle lens distortion. You may want to create submasters for that material first.

You can crash out of it, and next time you launch MC, hold down the option or ALT key. This opens the project but not any of the bins that may have been left open on last close.

Once a group clip is created you cannot add, remove, or change relationship of a clip. That has been the same since its release in December of 1994 and a long time request (since February 1995) to be able to do that. 😉

If the file format is .mov, I use QuickTime settings to rotate display for each file.
