These days, a 3 wire mesh is created to match phonemes (what used be the dope sheets in animation) and then added to the animals, then rendered to look like fur, lips, teeth, etc.

It is possible to use the footage as is, and using Elastic reality, re-time any lip movements to active dialog looking at the waveforms to get close. But, you may want to do that just to the mouth area and not the entire frame, so some matte work, tracking, etc. will be needed for that.

You are looking for a VFX artist that is capable of tracking, rotoscoping, matte generation, and experience with Elastic Reality to time the video to the dialog.

  • MC always verifies and rebuilds as necessary on startup, so it may be that it just needs to be reminded to do a complete one.

  • That is not an editable field, only a metadata display field. You might want to delete the msmFMID.pmr and msmMMOB.mdb files from each of the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/ folders and have Media Composer rebuild them upon launch and see if that helps your situation.

You can send them the shot as QT wrapped “same as source” if you want. Just make the sequence timecode the same as source if you export a sequence. Depending on version of MC, you can also do an AMA MXF export of the shot which will be MXF wrapped. Or try AAF embedded.

If it’s for the one VFX shot, you can choose to embed the media in the AAF file as well.

You can’t get that info in the bin. Many providers know how to parse an AAF file and correctly link to the MXF media.I do this all the time with Smoke, Resolve, etc. The info needed is in the AAF. What host system are you trying to bring this into?

  • If you need to send media (essence), drag the events into their own timeline (copy/paste, or subsequence). Then with that new timeline of just the events of VFX, you can consolidate the media with handles to a target drive then send to your artist.

If metadaa only, then for the same sequence of VFX events created in prior process, use “decompose” to create a new set of clips with defined handles, drag those clips to a timeline, then generate an EDL or AAF depending on what their system supports which will have the info they need to go back to the original sources.

December 11, 2014 at 2:36 pm in reply to: DaVinci Resolve to Avid to AMA Relink

That can work, but personally I am not a fan of a source having both… may just be personal preference. I could never get a clear answer out of Avid whether this was a recommended method either, but it seems to work. BWF via AMA link end up with Tape, Source File, and TapeID…

The DaVinci footage always embeds whatever REEL is set to into the TAPE field because that is how Avid’d SDK for third parties work. Currently only MC can populate the Source File column when AMA linking or importing.

Since v6.5 you could relink between Tape and Source File, and in v7 you can set up a relink between most any column as long as the values were the same.

In your scenario, you had to apply the existing TAPE name from the offline on a per clip basis, but can be a tedious for a lot of clips. But depending on number of clips, it’s manageable, so good for you.

I always ensure when using file formats that have 8 character embedded REEL like BMD cameras, Alexa ProRes, Red R3D, and such that when processing in DaVInci, I export the ALE and merge into my offline dailies to have both the original filename and the embedded REEL. That way later in an AMA conform, I have everything I need to do a relink based on any value.

It still won’t work as there is no common field of metadata for it to relink on. Embedded uses an 8 character representation of the complete filename to stay within CMX 3800 EDL specifications and other legacy workflows. But Media Composer has yet (many many requests) to support embedded REEL directly from the QuickTime wrapper when AMA linking.

So in this scenario you have 8 characters in TAPE and the full file name in Source File and never the twin shall meet.

    Your options:

    1. Retranscode your dailies using clip name rather than embedded.

    2. Export an ALE of your resolve session which “should” contain the 8 character REEL somewhere (I need to confirm) and with a bit of txt editing, merge that info back into your DNxHD 36 clips, then you have a column with that 8 character REEL ID which can be used in the relink process.

    3. If you still have access to the original folder structure from the camera, and if enabled, there are two metadata files, one in XML and the other is ALE. The ALE has both entire filename and 8 character version that can be merged into your dailies.

I really wish Avid would just support embedded EEL metadata when AMA linking – would make life so much easier for so many people.

  • The metadata in the “Name”column has no real bearing on a relink process and could be named the 50 states all it cares. The columns of interest will be Tape, Source File, and Video Format (I think that’s the name).

For you to do a relink in this scenario, highlight the sequence, then in the relink dialog box at the bottom, there are several selections for relinking by resolution, either specific or highest, etc. When doing this type of relink, I like to color code my target clips to the same color, or be sure to add resolution to the clip info in the timeline to ensure it linked. Sometimes it is hard to tell visually.
