Good to know that I may be experiencing a known problem. ;->
Two undesirable symptoms:
1- After an edit, the TC reported for the nested sequence is incorrect – it should be reading TC from the source clip in the nested sequence but instead reports values which are (I think) relative to the current sequence instead. I was able to correct this by doing something to the nested sequence that required it to be re-rendered (e.g. adding a lower-third some place). However, after the next edit, the TC reverts again to the incorrect value.
2- If I turn the TC Reader off at the source clip, TC is still displayed when the sequence is viewed from w/i the nest. I corrected this by reducing then restoring the opacity of the sequence in the nest. [Note: I suspect the same trick might have for #1.]

Figured it out. Thanks.

Not a far as I know in as much as it’s Apple that writes the drivers for the Io boxes and these drivers are designed to work with FCP.
It does make one wonder if it would be possible to write something akin to a standalone Log and Capture. I know that on the PC, the Blackmagic Decklink card comes with a small stand-alone app for capture that can be used w/o Premiere. But, of course, that’s a whole other platform. 😉

Lee – Thanks for the detailed response. The FCP doc could obviously be clearer on this point. ;->

Thanks, Lee. That’s in fact what I’ve been doing.
The FCP 5 documentation is not clear on this point, leastways WRT to the Io-family of devices that use Firewire but not as a DV transport. Page 184 of Volume IV says:
“Note: Timecode is sent via an RS-422 serial port. This is not supported for DV Firewire.”
To me implies that FCP is capable of serving as a TC generator during the blackening process for some class of capture/control devices (e.g. ones based on PCI and which have a 422 port for deck control). However, perhaps this isn’t possible with the Io because FCP commuicates with it via Firewire.
I’d be curious to learn of the experiences of folks with PCI-based devices such as the Kona. Can they blacken tapes with the deck set in EXT REGEN?

Something I’ve been wondering for a while:
I understand that the Io isn’t a Core Audio device but will it “play well” on systems where Core Audio devices (e.g. an MBox) may be present? Can I safely configure AfterEffects to use the Io for video playback only and Core Audio for audio playback?

I just experienced the *exact* same problem with an IoLD and FCP 4.5 after upgrading my firmware and the drivers. I found this thread after futzing around for a while on my own – uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, changing presets, poking around in all the various preferences (and trashing the same several times), all to no avail. Frankly, I hadn’t even installed the control panel on my system, thinking that it wouldn’t make a lot of sense on an LD only system. Guess I was wrong! ;->
Whatever the reason for this behavior, I’d like to suggest that the remedy be added to the Io troubleshooting FAQ on aja.com. That would have saved me some time.

Bob –
Thanks for the recommendations.
I spoke to Aja support about an hour ago and their opinion was that I’m running out of CPU – just. The machine in question is a “Quicksilver” 933 Mhz G4. It seems reasonable, though I’m not able to explain to myself how I can capture 8- and 10-bit using the Io w/o dropping a frame but then can’t play back the same material. Perhaps capture and playback are asymmetric WRT to the way the Io makes use of the CPU – i.e. capture is less CPU intensive than playback?
Fortunately, for the time being I can continue to use this system for editing by disabling video preview through the Io. I wasn’t in the market for a new machine this year but perhaps I might look into a CPU upgrade. I can’t imagine I need a lot more horsepower than I already have in the box.
