I’ve installed the most recent version of the drivers for the ATTO card but I’m still seeing the same problem in FCP: playback is flawless for a while, then I get some dropped (black) frames on the monitor and then a little later, the monitor goes black and FCP displays a terminal beachball.

I’ll point out again that I can use QT to play the same 8-bit UC clips from the same array w/o any problem and I can play the clip though perfectly from within FCP if I’m not going out to the IoLD – so I don’t have much reason to suspect a problem pulling the data off the drives fast enough.

For playback through the IoLD I’m selecting the following preset:

    ProIO SDI 29.97Hz – NTSC US – 8-bit 422 (720 x 486)

which I’m pretty sure is the right one (or is it?).

Are there are other variables that I should be looking at to help isolate this problem?

Thanks Bob! I’ll give that a try and let you know what I discover. It would be *great* if this cleared things up.

BTW: I know what you mean about the SCSI stuff. For me it’s one part “old timer syndrome” and one part that I have other needs for SCSI and I had this handy enclosure laying around so as long as it’s available. 😉

What I really want is a “small” SATA-based SAN so I can acccess my content from any machine in the studio. One or two TB would be plenty.

    Bob –

Doh! Your are quite right. I am of course using 1/4″ TSR plugs into LINE IN for the Io. It’s been so long since I put this system together I had forgotten! ;->

The point in responding to your orignal post was only to clarify that one needs to use 1/4″ TSR plugs and not 1/4″ unbalanced plugs. Someone who make the first mistake (XLR into MIC IN) might also make the second.

I assume you mean “plug into the *TSR* phone plug LINE INPUTS” – i.e. the signal in question coming out of the VTR is still balanced. The output from the AJA is however unbalanced. On my Mackie 1202 I put these into one of the unbalanced, stereo LINE IN channels.

I feel so ashamed. Everyone else knows this to be the truth except me. ;-(

Using firewire MEANS using the codec, which means degradation. I think we can avoid the semantics arguements here. Using SDI bypasses the codec, comes directly off of the TBC and results in an upsampled 4:2:2 signal. This is why you can key from it.

DV/DVCAM is 4:1:1 format. The use of SDI *may* provide a superior mechanism for capturing to disk but I don’t see how it can add back missing bits of chrominance data through upsampling. Any banding on tape would I suppose simply be “transcribed” into the 4:2:2 sampling.

SDI with embedded audio is the shiz-nit. Accept no subsitutes.

OK, gotta ask: why would anyone want to risk taking down a production machine with the .0 release of a major revision to the OS? Me: I’m not changing anything till Apple releases 10.4.1.

Yes, I read that on the web site too. My question is whether I can capture the 6 channels embedded in SDI using it.

…speaking of which, anyone know if Multichannel Audio support in FCP5 will allow us to capture all 6 audio channels embedded in SDI at once? The web site (link below) speaks of support for “professional multichannel audio and video devices” but doesn’t get any more specific.
