Sounds like you need a consumer monitor… ala’ Best Buy, Frys, etc. The pricing for those is pretty similar.

Go with an LCD. Cheaper than LEDs, and not prone to issues Plasmas have (including weight and burn in).

Ensure it has HDMI in for consumer video gear, and VGA and DVI if possible. This will allow almost any computer to connect to it.

Consider investing in a mini display port adapter so any new-ish Mac users can connect to your monitor.

What version of Media Composer?

Are you attempting to Import or AMA Link?

Is the footage you were given still in the original folder / file hierarchy it was recorded by the camera in?

The 900 records in DVCProHD. The new footage you wwre given, was it ALSO recorded on the 900?

Can you clarify what happens and HOW you are doing it?

Can you not AMA link OR Import? These are 2 different things.

Can you play the animation file at the desktop level (outside of Avid) in Quicktime?

Yes, the Mac, by default, does not have a BD drive. Compressor, as you see, can create the h.264 and ac3, which you will have to manually use these in software (like Toast) and get a 3d party burner.

Did you use the wizard in Compressor? Or just the preset for a blu-ray disc?

You may want to looking into burning an AVCHD disc (lower bitrate AVCHD / blu-ray compliant file) onto a red laser (SD) disc. This works well for shorter projects and delivers very good HD results.

Also check your OS settings (System Preferences). You may have that key assigned to an OS function (Spotlight, Expose, etc) which will trump FCP functions.

Try a smaller section at first and try to eliminate what media may not have been mixed down/transcoded properly.

Does the same issue happen when trying to export a full QT movie – not a reference?

You will need Automatic Duck to import ProTools OMF into FCP. Works great. FCP will not do this natively.

As far as new features of FCP 8, nothing has been made publicly available, so it’s a crapshoot on feature sets.

In a nutshell, you play tones of of your speakers, and using a Sound Meter, you set the volume level of the tones to 85dB for listening. This volume level approximates the listening level in a theater so you can mix elements in relationship to one another.

I highly recommend hiring a post sound person to do a mix. An Avid is not the best environment for sample accurate editing or mixing. Yes it can be done, but for the same reason I don’t put a Pinto in the Daytona 500.

Try this:

Transcode (or mix down) a small section of your AMA sequence to MXF, then try an AAF Export. Avid may not be exporting a fully compliant AAF when using AMA linked media.
