I hate to keep posting this, but I think an overview of Fast Import for Avid may help:

A benefit of Neo3D (and 4K), is that new Panasonic Camera (DA1) is already supported – and with 1 stop shopping.

First Light can take the native files and do the wrapping for you – unlike other 3D formats, which require ReMaster THEN Firstlight.

Cineform has worked closely with AJA, and the AJA Kona 3 drivers have the ability to interop with Cineform (and active metadata) to output the 3D in a myriad of formats; up to dual link (LE on 1 output, RE on 2nd SDI output) at 2K.

I’ve been fortunate enough to speak on 3D in Post with Panasonic and Createasphere at various places around the country these past few months, which resulted in a blog post you may find interesting: https://michaelkammes.com/editorial/3d-in-post-avid-vs-fcp/ .

    Good Luck!

    Hello!

A file encoded with the Cineform codec will play in an FCP timeline provided the codec is installed on the machine. RT performance is dependent on the CPU, as Cineform is not an easy codec to decode. I find that the Westmere & previous model Nehalem Macs will handle it fine, Harpertowns are hit and miss.

Avid can play Cineform files via AMA; again, provided the codec is installed (free form Cineforms website)

1 thing to consider is that Cineform has varying levels of quality. Thus, a higher quality setting will necessitate a higher powered CPU (see above).

Yes, the Cinedeck will pass along all of the metadata entered into the file, and I’ve played the files in both FCP and Avid with no issue.

That being said, Cinedeck can encode into ProRes and DNxHD, and it looks pretty darn good. Ensure your firmware and software level are recent, the Cinedeck has had several critical updates in the past few months.

    Hi Wendell:

I recently wrote up how to perform a Fast Import correctly. Hope this may help!

    Thanks for the welcome.

Been signed-up for a while – was in Chicago until 2008 doing “what I do”, but really only used to Cow for research than sharing – I have my blog – not to mention my employeer – to keep me busy dispensing information – tongue in cheek humor AND tech related!

Glad my article spawned some discussion, albeit prêt-à-porter based 😉

I’m sure nothing is “new”, but frankly, I had never seen a list, other than my common sense to interns, or vague one-offs years ago in college. However, if any of you were the originators of aid “rules” – then thanks, obviously I heard of them somehow!
