A file encoded with the Cineform codec will play in an FCP timeline provided the codec is installed on the machine. RT performance is dependent on the CPU, as Cineform is not an easy codec to decode. I find that the Westmere & previous model Nehalem Macs will handle it fine, Harpertowns are hit and miss.
Avid can play Cineform files via AMA; again, provided the codec is installed (free form Cineforms website)
1 thing to consider is that Cineform has varying levels of quality. Thus, a higher quality setting will necessitate a higher powered CPU (see above).
Yes, the Cinedeck will pass along all of the metadata entered into the file, and I’ve played the files in both FCP and Avid with no issue.
That being said, Cinedeck can encode into ProRes and DNxHD, and it looks pretty darn good. Ensure your firmware and software level are recent, the Cinedeck has had several critical updates in the past few months.
