We are taking delivery of our first 3D cam (AG-3DA1) and we’re trying to get a workflow together asap. Anybody out there well versed in this area?

We’re currently a fcp house using decklink cards.

    Thanks!

When your shooting with 3DA1 have a look at:

The 3DA1 Calc app determines how much positive parallax will be in your final stereoscopic 3D image when it is displayed on a 3DTV or in a digital cinema 3D theatre, and is specifically designed for use with Panasonic’s AG-3DA1 3D camcorder.

We use Neo3D. It has an option to auto import all the Panasonic 3D footage into one muxed file (Right Eye/Left Eye). Works really well. Neo3D isn’t cheap, but it’s well worth the money if you ask me.

Dashwood has some ways of managing 3D, but they’re much more difficult to create a workflow around. Not saying it can’t be done at all, but when compared to Neo3D, it’s not nearly as slick.

Having researched this myself a couple of months ago, the Neo3D solution requires a Kona card for proper support – even the Decklink 3D card did not have the proper drivers. Not sure if that has changed yet, but I would contact Cineform before proceeding, by all accounts they have a much better relationship with AJA than other vendors.

3D is for the birds. You should give up on 3D and return that camera in exchange for an Alexia or a Panasonic 4.2.2 P2 camera Steve.

A benefit of Neo3D (and 4K), is that new Panasonic Camera (DA1) is already supported – and with 1 stop shopping.

First Light can take the native files and do the wrapping for you – unlike other 3D formats, which require ReMaster THEN Firstlight.

Cineform has worked closely with AJA, and the AJA Kona 3 drivers have the ability to interop with Cineform (and active metadata) to output the 3D in a myriad of formats; up to dual link (LE on 1 output, RE on 2nd SDI output) at 2K.

I’ve been fortunate enough to speak on 3D in Post with Panasonic and Createasphere at various places around the country these past few months, which resulted in a blog post you may find interesting: https://michaelkammes.com/editorial/3d-in-post-avid-vs-fcp/ .

    Good Luck!
