Do you qualify for the educational version? If you do, you get 4 years of free upgrades. I don’t know if you can upgrade to a non-educational license at any point, but you used to be able to. Might want to post on the Avid forums for clarity.
Unless it’s changed, the license agreement states that educational licenses can’t be used for commercial work, and when you fire up the software it will say Educational or something similar on the splash screen. Are you a professional looking for a price break? If so, you won’t qualify for the educational license unless you’re also an instructor or student at a university. And you shouldn’t be using it for commercial purposes if that’s the case. If you’re a student or instructor needing it for school, it’s $295 and you can buy the third party bundle for $195 (I think – check reseller sites to be sure).

If you’re learning Avid, learn the Avid keyboard shortcuts. They’re incredibly logical when you get down to straight cutting and trimming. 90% of your editing can be done with your left hand on the keyboard without even moving it off the home keys.

Premiere doesn’t have anything like Scriptsync. If you do a lot of scripted work or doc work with transcriptions it’s worth the purchase price. If you don’t it’s probably not worth it. Download the trial and try it.

Your 12-core Macs aren’t going to quit working. When they’re old and you need up upgrade your hardware, look at where things are. If Apple doesn’t have a suitable replacement or you don’t like where they’re going, buy a PC.
The parts are the same – the OS is the difference. Install Windows on your Mac and see if your software will run (if you have Windows versions). Otherwise, don’t sweat it. Or sell me your 12-cores for a couple hundred bucks. I’ll buy the lot of them. 🙂

What’s the last version of Media Composer you used? MC 5.5 has changed a lot in the way you can edit. It’s much friendly to FCP editors.
If anybody decides to go with Avid, definitely download the trial and watch the tutorials on the Avid site. They’ll get you started and explain the Avid way of doing things. Also, check your system specs against the Avid requirements – if you don’t meet them or you’re running to new of an OS or Quicktime and run into problems, it’s not necessarily the software’s fault. It could be your system (Avid is very specific about OS and Quicktime versions).

Wow – this is an old post.
If you don’t have a bin or project file, just open Media Tool, select the drive they’re on (make sure they’re in the right folder structure – M:\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1\mediahere
Is the original project name listed? If so, select it. If not, don’t select a project. Just select to show Master Clips and hit OK. It should load the master clips for those MXF files. Select them and drag them to a bin. Edit.

The offer was made the morning before FCPX was announced. It’s been there for about 2 months. Go to videoguys.com and order it for $1,000 if you need it – they had some stock left yesterday. Not sure if they still do though.
