June 29, 2011 at 5:45 pmNone needed, brother. No matter what year you left Media Composer, you’ll fall right back in it. Not much has changed since the mid 90s.

June 29, 2011 at 5:52 pmThere are some significant advancements, depending on how long it’s been. AMA, the Smart Tool, track based audio effects, advanced keyframe mode as default, etc… The general UI hasn’t changed much (less customizable, unfortunately) and the basic functions are the same (import/capture/export/lay to tape), but there’s a lot of new capabilities.
That said, if you ever spent significant time on an Avid it’ll probably come back to you rather quickly, like riding a bike. Then you can incorporate the new stuff when you’re back up to speed.

June 30, 2011 at 1:52 amMichael hit the nail on the head. I downloaded the 5.5 demo the other day and I was shocked that, after. 14 year hiatus, I still had some deep-rooted muscle memory for where the hotkeys were, how to navigate, etc…
It’s also true that, while the UI looks more or less the same, The newly added features are not only evident while cutting, but have had a profound impact on my experience with the software.
Everything old is new again and, after the last week and a half, I have to say: it’s refreshing.

July 1, 2011 at 12:23 pmI have a simple problem.
In the FCP to move from edit point to the next, I used the “UP” and “DOWN” arrows. It was a really fast and precise way to move the ruller. But In the MC I have found only a way when It turns to Trim Mode too. Can I tweak the keyboard layout or this is how It works here?
Thanks

This puzzled me too, but how I got it to work like final cut was to open up your command palette (command+3) and open up your keyboard preferences (project window>settings>keyboard preferences). Then, in your command palette, go to the “move” tab and drag REWIND and FAST FORWARD to your up and down arrow keys respectively.
Voila!

I’ve been trying to figure that one out for a little while as well.
Much Better.
