I like the concept of this, but how do you use this to keep your stuff really organized? Example – I always have bins for Graphics, Titles, SFX, Renders, Old Sequences, Music, VO, etc… Can you still organize this way in FCPX? Or do I have to select all my SFX and tag them with SFX, tag all Titles with Title, all music with Music, etc?

Regarding the Events folder – sounds like FCP is finally doing a good job of media management. A mix between Avid and FCP/Premiere. You can edit with the footage where it lies, or have it transcode it all to one folder for easy backup/tracking. I started on Avid so this would be a welcome addition for media tracking – just not sure I’m ready to give up how my footage is organized once it’s in the program. I’m looking forward to tutorials that explain this in further depth.

Genuine question – what tedious tasks is it making easier? I haven’t used the software and may not ever, but I’d be interested to hear what they’re doing to improve editing.

Dont update the software until a few weeks reading their Avid Forum :P”Sound advice for any software – let others shake the bugs out first.
While it’s easy to roll back a version on an Avid, and your projects are backwards compatible (or the bins at least), it’s always better to check the forums a week or two after release to actually upgrade.

Yeah. It runs on a Mac, has the features people need, works with the third party hardware they own. Why wouldn’t it be an alternative?[Lou Borella] “A piece of software that developers have barely gotten a chance to play with yet. To write drivers for.”
Apple could have given a beta version to developers to work with. Apparently they didn’t. So yeah, the software may be 7 hours old but that’s hardly Blackmagic or AJA or any plugin manufacturer’s fault for not having drivers or new plugins, if they’ve only had it for 7 hours too.[Lou Borella] “You are joking right?”

Media 100 works natively with 2K and 4K Red files – something FCPX can’t do. And, your AJA card works with Media 100 – something it doesn’t do with FCPx.
So yeah – Media 100. Why not?

You had to purchase an AJA card or Blackmagic, yes, but they interfaced with FCP, right? FCPX doesn’t. Hence the problem.

Read the AJA pdf. It’s preview quality footage coming from FCPX. I wouldn’t trust it for anything mission critical (color grading, for example).
Kudos for AJA for coming up with something like this so soon – too bad Apple has pretty much screwed their third party vendors by not keeping them in the loop (if in fact they haven’t).

That promotion started at NAB before FCPX was even announced.the end date has been there for a few months. Adobes promo started after fcpxwas announced, I think.
I’m going with June 22nd for the release. It’s my birthday so it must be so.

Compressor can be buggy with clusters and it takes a while to get all the processors ready and compressing. I’ve been comparing it to Adobe Media Encoder and Media Encoder smokes it every time. It’s 64-bit, multi-processor away without having to set up a cluster, starts immediately and closes files very quickly. When I used Sorenson it started faster than Compressor too (but randomly crashed when compressing more than 1 file at a time).
Compressor with clusters is nice, but it’s old and inefficient compared to pretty much everything else on the market. FCP7 is getting the same way, hence the “inefficient” statement Walter makes. FCP7 is pretty far behind everyone else at this point, so FCPX has a lot of catching up to do.
Apple really should have put on a better show and stayed around to answer questions. It would have stopped a lot of the Chicken Little stuff.
