If it’s burned onto the footage you could use Scratch Removal or Paint and clone it out. Since it’s just 1 pixel you should be able to borrow a pixel from above/below/right/left of it pretty easily without it being noticeable.

That’s right – it does not come with squeeze. But students used to be able to buy the third party stuff for 195 from videoguys.com. Check there to see if that’s still available. It’s worth the 200 dollars.

July 9, 2011 at 4:13 am in reply to: The Magnetic Timeline – What’s The Paradigm? What exactly does a trackless timeline do that you can’t do with a tracked timeline? Clips still have a vertical relationship don’t they, essentially giving them a tracked status of sorts? If you want all Red footage grouped for an online but you need some Red footage composited over some DSLR footage don’t you run into the same problem as a tracked timeline? I honestly don’t see the issue with tracks and I guess I don’t know what problem they represent that trackless fixes. There’s been a lot of great discussion about the concepts of tracked vs. trackless but can anyone give a realworld example of a problem a tracked timeline has that can only be solved via a trackless one?
For example, if dialogue is on 1 and 2 but it turns out i need a 3rd track of dialogue, insert a track. Then everything else is still on dedicated tracks but the track number has increased by one. Is it because you might end up with 30 tracks?

Avid now uses software activation. Install it on as many computers as you want, activate the one you’re using. When you’re done, deactive. Go home – activate the license on the home computer. When you’re done, deactivate. Go to work, reactivate. Rinse, repeat.
FCP didn’t call home to a license activation server like Avid does, but Avid doesn’t restrict how many systems you can install the software on. They just restrict how many of them can run Media Composer at once – and the answer is, only one of them.
If you want a dongle, I’ve heard you can call inside sales and buy one for $300. Personally, I prefer the dongle. I don’t have to rely on the internet connection, Avid’s server, or anything except me remembering to put it in my pocket before I leave.

[Chris Kenny] “We don’t really know anything on the subject of R3D support at this point. “
??
We know it’s not natively supported and that, when FCPX launched, Red wasn’t working with Apple to provide native support. We know it’s the only NLE that doesn’t support native .r3d files. We know that Apple has made no official statement about .r3d support. That’s pretty substantial to quite a few people. To say we really don’t know anything about .r3d support is rather dismissive.

They’re installed when you install MC but you can also download them from the Avid site.

1. You can read it via AMA, but you’ll do best to transcode it. Which answers question 02:
2. DNxHD. It’s Avid’s ProRes (actually, Avid had DNxHD for years before ProRes). There are varying levels of DNxHD, like DNxHD36, 115, 175, 220, 220x, etc… The numbers denote the bit rate. If it has an x it means it’s 10-bit. They’re limited to HD only, no 2K+ and no SD. But they all recognize alpha channels, I believe.
Good luck with Avid. Learn the keyboard. Learn the keyboard. Learn the keyboard.

[Paul Dickin] “What’s needed is metadata to identify which timeline asset belongs to which output channel. An interface which allows that to be allocated doesn’t inherently need ‘tracks’.”
I don’t understand how would this work. Do you tag every sound effect as SFX, edit and let them drop anywhere in the timeline, but tell the system to output all clips tagged as SFX to Track 05? Do you tag dialogue at DIALOGUE and export it to track 01? MUSIC tags go to tracks 3/4?
Honest question. I simply don’t see how this is more efficient than tracks – Dialogue on 1/2, music 3/4, SFX 5/6/7/8, etc…

June 29, 2011 at 8:33 pm in reply to: Apple bans any mention of FCPX Petition from Apple Discussion Boards[Stevo Chang] “It looks like Apple wants no mention of the petition on their discussion boards. Could Apple view the petition as a potential legal document and threat? “
No. It violated their TOS. From their TOS:
“Do not post polls or petitions or links to same.”
There’s a lot to be upset about concerning Apple right now, but this is hardly one of them.
EDIT: Copied/pasted the wrong portion of their TOS. Fixed now.

There are some significant advancements, depending on how long it’s been. AMA, the Smart Tool, track based audio effects, advanced keyframe mode as default, etc… The general UI hasn’t changed much (less customizable, unfortunately) and the basic functions are the same (import/capture/export/lay to tape), but there’s a lot of new capabilities.
That said, if you ever spent significant time on an Avid it’ll probably come back to you rather quickly, like riding a bike. Then you can incorporate the new stuff when you’re back up to speed.
