I am trying to figure out how to go about importing MXF files into Avid.

The files were created in Avid (by a client) exported and uploaded to our server for us.
We download the files into the Avid Media Files folder and attempt to import them only to get an error message reading: “you cannot import this file into a bin. See the documentation about transferring media files”

    You can’t import .mxf files.

You said you dropped them in the media files folder, right? If so, they should be on your media drive (say M:) here:
M:\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1 or a similar numbered folder, right? If not, put them there.

Now, open Avid. Open the project you need to import these into. Go to your Media Tool, select to show only Master Clips, choose the Project the files are from (it should reflect the client’s project name), and select the drive you dropped the .mxf files on.

Hit OK and your Media Tool will open and show you the masterclips for all the file your client gave you. Select them all and drag them to a bin. Done!

    Michael.

Just a thought, but they do have the .mxf at the end of the file?
Just because you said “exported” i wondered if they are ‘same as source’ .mov file.
    If so just normal import.
But expect it is what Michael said

Wow – this is an old post.

If you don’t have a bin or project file, just open Media Tool, select the drive they’re on (make sure they’re in the right folder structure – M:\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1\mediahere

Is the original project name listed? If so, select it. If not, don’t select a project. Just select to show Master Clips and hit OK. It should load the master clips for those MXF files. Select them and drag them to a bin. Edit.

Even though Avid could import MXF files with plug-ins, you may still fail with the process. In this case, you will need to convert the MXF files to a format accaptable for Avid Media Composer. I have used TransMXF for Mac to convert MXF/P2 MXF to Avid DNxHD mov for editing in Avid Media Composer. I think it worth to try because the conversion speed is fast and the converted videos are of high quality and video/audio synchronization.

    Hi,
I know this is an old post, but this isn’t working for me. I am not able to use Media Tool to view .mxfs in my Avid MediaFiles folder. Any suggestions?
