I believe McQueenUK is referring to imported Pal DV files that are lower field first, not captured files. Avid doesn’t recognize the lower field first and creates jitters. I haven’t tested it myself (I’m NTSC) so I don’t know if it’s a bug or an isolated incident.

You can’t remap the F1 key on the newer Avids. I guess they want to make sure people can always get to the help files.
As far as disabling help so it doesn’t pop up when your muscle memory kicks in–maybe remove the Help executable? You might get an error message or Avid might crash if you do this, so proceed with caution!

First, don’t try to make this an Avid vs. FCP debate. You’ll never have a dongle issue with FCP because they don’t use dongles but they limit how many systems you can install the program on (two), and of course they work (or should work) seamlessly with Macs–they’re all made from the same company!
Regarding your problem, try doing a dongle dump, restart Avid, and see what happens. If it still gives you the message, I would suggest you (or whoever owns the software) contact Avid directly for this. Try emailing them at warranty@avid.com and be sure to include all the information in your dongle dump and a detailed explanation of your problem.
And you might not want to go into a FCP tirade in your email or you might not hear back from them. 🙂

It might be because you’re running the wrong OS. According to the ReadMe, found here:

Xpress DV 4.6 for the Mac runs on 10.3.4 or 10.3.5. Roll back your OS to an approved version and see if it makes a difference. Otherwise, time to upgrade your software or live with the force quit!

Make new user settings and try again to trim again. Your current settings might be corrupted.

What resolution are your graphics? If you’re creating them at 1:1 you’ll get less realtime playback, which means you’ll render more. Try creating them at 2:1 or 3:1–you’ll likely not see a quality hit, but you should get more realtime playback.
Also, if your matte key effects/titles are set to render in High Quality (the HQ button in the effect editor) it’ll take forever to render. If you have HQ on, turn it off and you’ll probably see realtime playback.
Also, rendering your bug as a quicktime with alpha won’t save you anything in render times.
Depending on your resolution and how many layers of graphics you have, as well as the power of your system, you should get realtime or close to realtime playback, with very fast render times. I’m guessing you have HQ set.

Check your field order on import. If you’re importing it lower field first, try changing it to upper field first and see it that fixes it.

Why don’t you use the Blur effect instead of Resize? Then you can increase the blur to the point of total obscurity.
Also, because you said you’re using Animatte, I assume you’re on an Adrenaline. If you are, depending on when you bought it/updated it, you should have Boris Continuum Complete. If you do, look for the Witness Protection plugin–it’ll do what you’re wanting and includes a motion tracker. That makes is much easier if the person is moving a lot.

Select all the tracks you want to enlarge or shrink, then hit Ctrl+L to make them bigger, Ctrl+K to make them smaller. Adjust to taste.

That’s an error on Avid’s end. If you downloaded the 2.7.3 upgrade and installed it, you have the 2.7.3 upgrade. They seem to have forgotten to change the splash screen. You can read about it here:
