[AlliFilms] “Also, we were warned that if we’ve made any changes to the media (ie: if either of us has made subclips), then we’ll have problems. Have you encountered any?”
Who in the world is giving you this information? Have they edited on Avid before?
Subclips won’t cause problems. They reference the original media just like a master clip, but instead of referencing the entire clip they look at just a small piece of it. It’s like taking your master clip and setting an In and Out. Marking Ins and Outs don’t affect your media, just like subclips don’t.
Regarding relinking–import the bin the other person was working on, select all the clips, then go to Bin–>Relink. Choose to relink offline clips to media, select your media drives, and hit OK. Chances are, however, that you won’t even have to do this. They’ll probably relink already if your project and the other person’s project are named the same. And you’ll definitely want to name them the same–it will make things easier when it comes to consolidating/deleting your media.
If you run into any problems as you progress, let us know. And you might want to take the information you’re getting from your source with a grain of salt–it sounds like they’ve never done this before and aren’t really sure how things work. 🙂

August 21, 2007 at 1:55 pm in reply to: Digitize tool source is always composite when create new project?I’ve was having this same problem on our Xpress Meridien. I have my Digitize settings set to its own workspace, so I just opened the Digitize Workspace, set it to SDI (that’s what we capture with, instead of component), and resaved the workspace. Now it defaults to SDI instead of Composite.
If you use a Workspace or Toolset, start a new project, activate that Toolset/Workspace, change your digitize settings from Composite to Component, then resave the Workspace or Toolset. It should stick from there on.

[TVPROJOSH] “Do you know what I could do to correct this?”
Don’t export an avi. The type of avi that Avid exports is limited to 2GB. If you’re exporting an uncompressed avi you’ll hit that limit very quickly.
Exporting a quicktime will work, then you can take that to a third party conversion/transcoding program (like ProCoder or Sorenson Squeeze), and covert the quicktime to an avi, if you have to have an avi.

Under your Preferences you can change it so AE will always default to Linear keyframes, as opposed to Bezier. That way you won’t have to change it all the time.

Check your hard drives to make sure they’re not failing. If they’re having a problem you need to back them up immediately and replace them. If they go down, you lose all of your media.
Also check their connections–you might have a bad cable or a busted firewire port/card, depending on how your system/storage is set up.

August 15, 2007 at 3:15 pm in reply to: End frames from animations created outside Avid don’t match!?Here’s how to work around Avid’s alpha deficiencies to make a still frame:
1. Lets say your animation is on V2, with a Matte Key effect because it has an alpha channel. Step into the Matte Key effect so you see the Matte and Fill.
2. Mark In/Out on the frame you want to freeze and select the Matte track. Hit Alt+C to copy that frame to your source monitor.
3. Create a freeze frame of the Matte. Now select the Fill and copy it to your source monitor. Create a freeze frame of the fill.
4. Step out of the Matte Key effect. Cut the Matte freeze frame you just made onto V3, the Still freeze frame onto V2, both at the duration you need to the graphic to hold.
5. Collapse these two freeze frame clips together onto V2. Drag(don’t Alt+Drag like you’re going to nest, just drag) a Matte Key effect to your collapsed tracks. It will replace the submaster effect with a matte key and you now have a freeze frame with alpha.
It looks and sounds like a lot, but you can do it in just a few seconds once you get the hang of it.

It sounds like your P2 media isn’t associated with a project.
How are you bringing it into the Avid? If you open a project and consolidate it off the cards it will be associated with that project. If you’re just doing a file transfer at the desktop level then importing the Master Clips they’ll be orphan media.
The only way I know to stop the P2 files from showing up in every project in the Media Tool is to associate them with a project. That means consolidating off the cards when you first bring the footage in or doing a file transfer, selecting all the clips, and consolidating them–deleting the original media (so you don’t have duplicates). The latter is time consuming, yes, but should solve your problem.

August 15, 2007 at 2:23 pm in reply to: End frames from animations created outside Avid don’t match!?I’m not sure why you’re seeing the shift, but why don’t you just create a freeze frame in Avid? That way you don’t have to go back to AE for the still, and the motion should be consistent.

You can’t export an .avi over 2 gig, or an OMF, but you can export much quicktimes in any size, depending on the drive you’re exporting to.
I’m guessing you’re exporting to a FAT32 formatted drive. FAT32 has a 2 gig file size limit. If you have another drive that’s formatted NTSF, or if you can reformat your FAT32 drive to NTSF you’ll get around this problem.
Be warned!! Reformatting a harddrive will erase everything on it! Only reformat if you’ve backed everything up or if you can afford to lose all information on that drive!

In addition, if that dreaded lawsuit ever comes from the music or film industry, who do you think will be the first one let go?
You.
You put it in there, and it won’t matter than you told them it was illegal and you didn’t want to. They’ll drop you like a stone and use your salary to settle out of court. Trust me, when it hits the fan your boss isn’t going to take a bullet for you.
So what do you do? Well, you can flat out refuse to put it in there until they provide the papers that show you specifically have the rights to the music/film, but again–you’ll likely be canned before that happens because you’re not being a “team player”.
Good luck. I’m not sure what to tell you.
