I totally understand that the traffic is important, and the more traffic you can drive to the site the better it is for the Cow, and definitely for the advertisers.
I guess I was looking for a way to “subscribe” to a thread and get email notifications that say “an answer has been posted to the thread ‘thread subject line’ you subscribed to”, without seeing the actual post. That would drive me immediately to the site to read the thread. But that could also work against you–it may lead people to only come back reading when they see something has been posted! It would be easy to miss the other great threads you find by browsing.
Kind of a double edged sword, eh? And I’m sure the extra bandwidth/server costs would be huge. So I’d love to see it, but it makes sense why it wouldn’t be implemented.
Thanks for responding. Now I need to go find 150 questions to answer to hit the 1,000 post mark!

PS. About the number of advertisers on the site–I personally see it as a plus. We needed to buy stock footage the other day so I came straight to the Cow to see if a stock footage company was advertising here. If I see their ad here I know it’s a legit company, and there’s often a discount for clicking through!

We need some more info about your system. Namely, what OS (XP/Vista etc…), graphics card, driver number for your graphics card, and Quicktime version are you running?
All of these can/will determine if you can run Media Composer. Ideally you’ll have an nVidia Quadro card (at least the 570, I believe).

Do you have Sorenson Squeeze? If these are new Avid purchases, it comes with it (it came with old Avid’s too–I’m just not sure when they started bundling it).
If you have Sorenson (or another compression program)installed on your Avid, export a quicktime reference (it should take at most a few seconds), then bring the quicktime reference into Sorenson and set it up to encode to the .avi of your choice.
If the compression programs are on another computer, export a quicktime then take it over.

Step into the effects and replace the lowest level (which will be just the clip).
Or, if Segment Mode, double click the effect to “open” it up on the timeline and reveal the level below, which will be a nested effect (double click that) or the layer (if you’re using only one effect).
Also, map the Replace Edit key to your keyboard and try it–it may do what you want, but I’m pretty sure it will get rid of the effects. So you’ll need to step in.

Actually, what he’s wanting to do can’t be done in Avid.
What you want is to move your video and your audio, which is linked to it, automatically comes along for the ride. Then, in you need to move the audio only, you unlink it from the video so it now operates seperately. Right?
Avid doesn’t work that way. It makes no assumptions about bringing audio with video when you’re moving clips around. If you want the audio to come with the video–you have to select the audio as well as the video. Linking and unlinking is something I’ve seen in FCP and Premiere–personally, I hated it. I prefer complete control without having to undo what the computer thinks I want to do.

What graphics card and drivers are you using? What OS? What version of Avid? We need more details, but if I had to guess–
You’re using a non-certified card or the wrong drivers. If you have an ATI card, this is normal. You need an nVidia card (Quadro series, model number depends on version of Avid). Or, if you have an nVidia card, you’re running drivers that are too new or too old.

What version of Quicktime do you have installed? I don’t think Sorenson like the latest version (7.5).
Otherwise, have you tried reinstalling Sorenson to see what happens? Maybe something was corrupted during the install. I’ve never heard of this issue.
Sorry I can’t help more. I’d just check my quicktime version. If you have 7.5, try rolling back to 7.4.

Do what Mark says–call the client(s) and ask permission.
We just finished a video where it wasn’t stipulated beforehand that we could use it for demo purposes, so I called the client, told them we loved working with them and hope to again in the future, and requested permission to add portions/all of the video to our reel. They said take it all and show it anyone we want!
Can’t hurt to ask. The worst they’ll say is no.
