Linking/unlinking video & audio tracks in Avid Xpress Pro
Posted by Alex Bluffield on September 3, 2008 at 9:59 amHi Final Cut Pro editor here trying to get to grips with Avid – I can’t see a button/shortcut for linking/unlinking video & audio tracks – am I missing something? Many thanks, Alex.

September 3, 2008 at 11:52 amIn the settings>keyboard settings, you’ll see two radio buttons – one is ‘map to keyboard’ and ‘map to menu’ (I think – I’m not at an Avid right now). Click the ‘map to menu’, click the key where you want to map the shortcut, the go to the menu item you want to map, then click.

September 3, 2008 at 1:22 pmHi Jon
Thanks for the nfo. I opened the command palette but can’t find a link/unlink video/audio function in any of the tabs. In fcp there’s a radio button/keyboard shortcut – I’m sure there must be something similar in Avid Xpress Pro (using 5.8)? Regards,Alex.

September 5, 2008 at 11:52 amIt’s not in the command pallette – it’s in the menu bar. It’s under ‘clip’, if I remember correctly. You can either put a shortcut on your keyboard or use it directly from the menu. You may need to have your clips selected. I don’t use relink at all, so you may need to read the manual to get the basics down.

September 10, 2008 at 5:53 pmActually, what he’s wanting to do can’t be done in Avid.
What you want is to move your video and your audio, which is linked to it, automatically comes along for the ride. Then, in you need to move the audio only, you unlink it from the video so it now operates seperately. Right?
Avid doesn’t work that way. It makes no assumptions about bringing audio with video when you’re moving clips around. If you want the audio to come with the video–you have to select the audio as well as the video. Linking and unlinking is something I’ve seen in FCP and Premiere–personally, I hated it. I prefer complete control without having to undo what the computer thinks I want to do.
Michael.

September 11, 2008 at 11:28 amThanks Michael, that’s exactly the info I wanted to know. I know a lot of fcp editors that have linking turned off, but personally I have it turned on & hold down Option to do split edits etc. Now I know where I’m at it with Avid – thanks!
